P. 207 PSYC 385-3 Animal Behavior
FROM: Considers psychological processes across infra-
human species, and includes consideration of the
neuro-physiological and genetic bases and the
description and analysis of behavior as these
relate to the study of human behavior.
TO:
Topics such as
altruism, parental care, mate choice, sex
differences in behavior, aggression, dominance
and territorality are considered from an
evolutionary perspective. The role of heredity
and environment in the development of these
behaviors is also discussed.
RATIONALE: ?
The new description reflects the content of the course
as it has been taught for the past several years.
The current content enable instructors to co-ordinate
its content with that of other psychology courses such
as PSYC 280, PSYC 360, PSYC 351, PSYC 355 and 356.
Instructors teaching the course have found that it is:
more important for students to have had PSYC 201 than
to have had BISC 101 and 102.
Delete PSYC 460-5 Social Psychology
Add PSYC 461-5 Attitudes, Social Cognition, and the Self

The proposal is to split the present 5 credit upper level seminar in
Social Psychology (Psyc. 460) into Psyc. 461: Attitudes Social Cognition, and
the..'Self, and Psyc. 462: Interpersonal Relations and Group Processes.
There has been considerable growth in social psychological theory and
research over the last 15 years. Gradually, two subfields have emerged within
the discipline, one which focuses on individuals' cognitive activities in
social contexts, the other on group processes. This growth is reflected in
the organization of the leading journal in the field (Journal of Personality
and Social Psychology) which divides social psychological research into
individual and group sections.
Our courses have no't kept pace with the growth in social psychology.
What has happened as a result is that Psyc. 460 covers quite different material
when taught by different instructors or by the same instructor at different
times. This consequence is in violation of the requirements specified in the
undergraduate-calendar. Further, the department gets more and more requests
from students to take Psyc. 460 twice and get credit each time. Unfortunately,

we cannot do this even though totally different material may be covered under
the Psyc. 460 heading. For these reasons, we recommend that Psyc. 460 be
divided into Attitudes and Social Cognition (Psyc. 461) and Interpersonal
Relations and Group Processes (Psyc. 462).
We propose that one of Psyc. 461 or 462 be offered each semester.
There should be no enrollment problems since, at present, we offer Psyc. 460
every semester and yet we always have to turn students away. Finally,
imp1eientation of this proposal will require no additional departmental
resources.

Attribution Theory and Social Cognition
This course will consist of an in-depth examination of attribution
theory. Students will be expected to participate actively in the seminar.
They will be required to design and carry out a piece of empirical research
and to submit a paper based on this research. In addition to a large number

Prejudice and Stigma
The roots of prejudice and stigma are to be found in a social
psychology of group influence. This course focuses on the antecedents
and processes of group influence which give rise to discrimination
and stigmatization.
