The Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee at its meeting of January 23, 1986
approved the deletion of PSYC 365 Psycholinguistics permanently, and the
addition of PSYC 366-3 Language Development, and PSYC 367-3 Experimental
Psycholinguistics. These courses have been circulated for overlap consideration,
and the report from the library is attached. Would you please put this on the
agenda of the next-meeting ofS.C.U;S; -----------------

Objectives of the Course This course explores language from a psychological perspective.
The -overall organizing framework will be language development. In the first part of the
course we shall consider the question of the origins of language in phylogeny. Consideration
will be given to a comparison between animal and human communication systems. In the
remainder of the course, we shall consider at length the question of the ontogency of
language 'i.e., what process and/or capacity underliethe child's acquisition of language.

Objectives of the Course The course provides an introduction to contemporary experimental
psycholinguistics. We will focus first on basic processes underlying adult native speakers'

ability to produce and comprehend language. Next, we will examine conversational behaviour.
Throughout, the emphasis will be on the knowledge and processes people must possess in order
to use language as a communication device. Finally, the relationship between language and
thought will be examined.
