Please put these proposed changes to the English Honors Program before the
appropriate committee.
1. Change of requirements:
From: ?
Two required Honors seminars (i.e. English 491, Engl. 492)
To:
11i required Honors seminar (i.e. Engl. 491)
2. Addition of a new course
English 494-2: Research for the Honors Graduating Essay
Prerequisite: Open only to students who have been accepted into the
Honors Program. The student must complete this course
before taking English 496 (Honors Graduating Essay)
3.
Delete ENGL. 492-2
Rationale:
Four years ago, the English Department instituted a new Honors Program. This
replaced a program composed entirely of individual research and writing courses.
The new program required students to take two 2 credit honors seminars,
(ENCL. 491-2 and ENGL 492-2), as well as English 364-4 (the History and
Principles of Literary Criticism) and English 496-4 (Honors Graduating Essay).
However, two probeims have become apparent:
1)
since the Department can offer only one Honors seminar per semester,
students have little if any choice of seminar topic;
2)
since there is no research course, students spend much of English 496
on research, and they do not have enough time for the actual writing
of the Honors paper.
The alteratliôns .
: indicated above are designed to address these two problems.
The requirements that students take English 364 and English 496 would remain
unchanged.
If these changes are acceptable to the Faculty and the Senate, the Department
of English requests that the new requirements go into effect in 1986-3.

Subject: ENGLO1O-3
?
Date: May 8, 1986
The attached memorandum from Sheila Roberts, Assistant to the Dean in the
Faculty of Arts, was received in late November 1985. 1 understood from the
memo that ENGL 099-2 had replaced ENGL 010-3, that ENGL 010-3 no
longer existed as a course, and that the request was editorial in nature to
ensure that the Calendar was corrected. It was brought to my attention
later by the Calendar Clerk that the course was listed in the Calendar and
that there appeared to be no approval for its deletion.
Consequently, I am bringing forward this request from the Faculty of Arts to
delete the course ENGL 010-3 for the reasons as set out in the memorandum
from Sheila Roberts.

The Department of English has asked that all references to ENGL 010-3
Writing, be removed from the calendar. ENGL 099-2 University Writing,
replaced ENGL 010-3 Writing, and the latter course was retained for
a limited time in the DISC mode until the DISC version of ENGL 099-2
was completed and available to be offered. This is now the case, and
the Dean of Arts Office supports the Department's request.
