I NTRODUCT ION
Under Senate rules, the Senate Committee on Academic Planning is required to submit an
annual report. This particular report covers the activities of SCAP for the calendar year
1985.
As most of the recommendations flowing from SCAP are subsequently reviewed by Senate,
this report presents only highlights of the major proposals considered by the Corn mitee and
actions or issues stemming therefrom.
ACTIVITIES DURING 1985
Approved a proposed program of zero-credit athletic courses in principle.
Recommendations forwarded to Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies and Senate
in January, 1985.

Directed the Chairman of SCAP to establish a three-person sub-committee to review the
Canadian Studies Program. Approved the composition of the sub-committee and terms
of reference in March 1986.
3.
Approved proposals to discontinue the undergraduate minor, major and honors programs
and the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Russian and German. Recommendations forwarded
to Senate in February, 1985.

Approved proposals to mount graduate programs in Engineering Science leading to
Master of Engineering and Master of Applied Science degrees. Recommendations
forwarded to Senate in March, 1985.
5.
Reconsidered the target quota of 7% on new undergraduate international student
admissions to SFU as required by Senate. Recommendations to retain the 7% quota
forwarded to Senate in March, 1985.
6. Approved proposals from the Centre for the Arts for extensive curricular changes in
response to budget cuts imposed on the Centre. Recommendations forwarded to Senate
in April, 1985.
7.
Accepted the report of the External Review Corn mitee on Biochemistry. Approved a
motion that the University attempt to secure funding to hire a Director for a limited term
to plan for the establishment of an Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
8.
Approved proposals for a registration priority system for undergraduate courses.
Recommendation sent to SCUS and to Senate in September, 1985.
9.
Approved proposed changes to the joint majors program in Psychology, Linguistics an
Philosophy and the change of name to "Program in Cognitive Science."
Recommendations sent to SCUS and Senate in October, 1985.

Approved proposed undergraduate enrollment quota system for the School of Computing

Science. Recommendations forwarded to Senate in December, 1985.

Approved proposed undergraduate enrollment quota system for the School of
Criminology. Recommendations forwarded to Senate in December, 1985.
12.
SCAP, during the course of the year, also received and discussed verbal reports at most
meetings on the progress of the Downtown Planning Committee.
