Appointment to Senate Appeals Board
S. McShane was elected as alternate to D. Ryeburn on the Senate Appeals
• ?
Board. Dr. McShane replaces G. Rheumer, who has retired from the
University.
Action taken
The following action: was taken leading to subsequent approval by Senate:
English Language Requirement for Non-Native Speakers (S-85-43)
In Dec. 1984 Senate had referred back to S.U.A.B. a proposal to require
Permanent Residents, for whom TOEFL was an admission requirement, to
also take the English Language Proficiency Test and any required E.S.L.
courses.
S.U.A.B. approved an English Language requirment which removed citizenship
and visa status from the criteria to be applied in English proficiency
evalutions. Senate approved this as policy in October 1985.

r Courses Taken at another Institution while the St
uired to Withdraw Status
The Board approved procedures to enable students to take courses at
other institutions while required to withdraw from the University.
Approvals were expected to be granted only in unusual circumstances
and would require the approval of the appropriate Dean or the Director
of the Academic Advice Centre.
Other Matters Discussed
The following topics were discussed:
Admission of New Students from B.C. Grade 12
The Board defeated a motion to admit a number of students who had been
conditionally admitted to the Fall Semester 1985, based on predicted
grades, but whose final grades had resulted in an admission average
marginally below the minimum standard of 2.5.
Sub-Committee Report on Admission Requirements from B.C. Grade 12
The report of the Sub-Committee was received as presented. Its major
recommendations were not generally supported and no action was taken.
It was noted that the task force on curriculum could have impact on
admission policies. S.U.A.B. agreed to review the matter at a later
date.
Survey of Students Who Failed to Register
Dr. Wattamaniuk of Analytical Studies presented a report on a survey
of students who had been accepted into the University but had failed
to register.
Results of E.S.L. Questionnaire
The results of a questionnaire concerning the S.F.U./Douglas College
E.S.L. remedial program were presented to the Board for information.
Transfer Credit for Courses Offered by New Summits University College
A decision to grant transfer credit for courses offered by New Summits
