Subject: Proposal - Admission to
?
Date: 1986/03/13
Concurrent Studies
Fran time to time we receive requests fran B.C. secondary schools and fran
departments at the University to admit gifted secondary school students so
that they might take one or two courses for credit while they are enrolled in
courses in their secondary school programs. These requests have been handled
on an individual basis at varying levels of formality.
This proposal is to establish a formal policy for admitting such students, to
facilitate efforts being made in the University to provide better
opportunities for enrichment of the secondary school curriculum.
Proposal:
That limited numbers o
f
:tudents who are currently enrolled in B.C. secondary
school programs in Grades 11 or 12 be admitted to the University to pursue
"Concurrent Studies". The following conditions will apply:
- Applicant must be currently enrolled in B.C. Gr. 11 or Gr. 12.
- Applicant must have the recannendation of the secondary school
principal.
- Applicant must have the consent of the parent or legal guardian
if under the legal age of majority on the date that classes begin.
- Applicant must have the support of the Dean of the Faculty in which
he/she plans to enrol.
- Applicant must have a superior academic record.
- Admission will be limited to one semester only, renewable with the
support of the Dean of the Faculty.
- Registration will be restricted to a maximum of 2 courses, specified
in advance.
Students in concurrent studies will be treated as regular students in most
respects except that they may not register in a full range of courses and that
their eligibility to register will expire at the end of the first semester,
unless renewed. They will receive credit towards academic credentials and will
be issued standard transcripts (Permanent Record). Fees, deadlines, etc. will
be as for regular students.

Conclusion:
The above new basis of admission will make it relatively easy to accept
students on either an individual basis (e.g. a gifted MATH student who wishes
to study at the University level while in secondary school) and groups (e.g.
Faculty of Arts Summer Institute). No significant additional costs are
foreseen.

The Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee at its meeting of March 13, 1986
discussed the proposal for a concurrent registration category. The
committee unanimously endorsed this proposal which will enable the
University to respond to the needs of outstanding high school students.
As you know, the faculty is planning to hold a summer institute for
high school students this July and the new category will greatly
facilitate this undertaking.
