Action undertaken by the Senate Graduate Studies Committee at
its Meeting on March 24, 1986, gives rise to the following motion:
MOTION:
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth in S.86-28
the proposed change in Section 1.5.1 of the General
Regulations - Graduate Studies:
?
?
Delete: The CGPA is the cumulative average of the?
grade points earned in all the' graduate
courses accepted towards a Master's or
Doctoral degree at this University.
Add:

?
The CGPA is the cumulative average of the?
grade points earned in the SFU graduate
courses taken towards a Master's or Doctoral
degree."
RATIONALE:
All courses, whether taken at SFU or transferred from
another institution, are supposed to be calculated in
a student's CGPA. In practice, this is impossible in
some cases due to the variety of grading systems at
other institutions. As a result, at present, some
grades are converted and counted into the Grade Point
Average and others are not. The proposed new policy
has the advantage that it is possible to implement
consistently; in the old policy it is not.
