ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
SENATE COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC PLANNING
JANUARY 1, 1984 - DECEMBER 31, 1984

INTRODUCTION
Under Senate rules, the Senate Committee on Academic Planning is
required to submit an annual report. This particular report covers the
activities of SCAP for the
calendar year 1984.
As most of the recommendations flowing from SCAP are subsequently
reviewed by Senate, this report presents only highlights of the major
proposals considered by the Committee and actions or issues stemming
therefrom.
ACTIVITIES DURING 1984
1.
A Proposal for an Extended Studies Diploma-Ethnic Relations
was approved. Recommendations were forwarded to Senate in
February, 1984.
2.
A proposal to implement the M.A. Program in Women's Studies was
approved. Recommendations were forwarded to the President in
March, 1984.
3.
A proposal to discontinue the moratorium on. admission to
Extended Studies Diploma programs in Business Administration and
Computing Science was approved.
4.
A proposal to review the Canadian Studies Program was tabled
until the PACUP report became available.
5.
A proposal to develop a Masters Program in Engineering Science
was given in-principle approval. The Faculty was requested to
develop a detailed proposal.
6.
A proposal to limit to 7% the. number of international students
admitted as majors in the Faculty of Business Administration and
the Department of Computing Science was approved.
Recommendations were forwarded to Senate in April, 1984.
7.
A Proposal for an Extended Studies Diploma in Kinesiology was
approved. Recommendations were forwarded to Senate in April,
1984.
8.
A proposal to discontinue the Biophysics Program was given
approval. Recommendations were forwarded to Senate in April,
1984.
9.
A proposal for a M.Sc. Program in Statistics was approved.
Recommendations were forwarded to Senate in April, 1984.
10.
A proposal to limit enrollments in Communication, Criminology
and Kinesiology was referred back to the Faculty of
Interdisciplinary Studies Curriculum Committee.

11.
Proposed changes to the Graduate Curriculum in Sociology and
Anthropology were approved. Recommendations were forwarded to
Senate in June, 1984.
12.
The Prison Education Program contract was reviewed by the
Committee. A review of the Program will be undertaken in Fall,
1986.
13.
A proposalfor the School for Liberal and Professional Studies
was approved. Recommendations were forwarded to Senate in June,
1984.
14.
The report of the Political Science External Review Committee
was considered by SCAP. The Dean of Arts was asked to report
back to SCAP in April, 1985 on actions taken in response to
recommendations contained within the report.
15.
A proposal for
a Ph.D. Program in Criminology was approved.
Recommendations were forwarded to Senate in November, 1984.

16. SCAP held a special meeting in November, 1984

moving the Management and Systems Science Program to the
Faculty of Science,
c)
moving the Centre for the Arts to the Faculty of Arts,
d)
moving the School of Criminology (renamed) to the Faculty
of Arts.
e)
moving the African/Middle East Program, Latin American
Studies Program, Women's Studies Program, Gerontology
Program and the Bachelor of General Studies Degree Program
to a division of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty
of Arts,
f)
moving the Canadian Studies Program to the Faculty of Arts,
g)
dissolving the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies.

17. The Senate Committee on Academic planning, during the course of
the year, also:
a) received and discussed verbal reports at most meetings on
the progress of the Downtown Planning Committee,
b)
received and discussed the Planning Study prepared by Dr.
Ken Strand for the Universities Council of British Columbia,
c)
held a special meeting with members of the President's
Advisory Committee on University Priorities to discuss
academic planning and the role of SCAP.
