Date ........... 1985..02..06 ............................
The Physics Department recently approved the following changes to
the course descriptions for PHYSICS 101-3 and PHYSICS 102-3:
PHYS 102:
From:
A general survey course for life science students.
Electricity, magnetism, optics, atomic physics, heat, kinetic
theory, temperature and thermodynamics, with applications to the
life sciences.
To:
A general survey course for life science students.
Electricity, magnetism, optics, quantum physics, with application to
the life sciences.
PHYS 101:
From:
A general survey course for life science students. Statics,
kinematics, dynamics, work, energy and power, simple harmonic
motion, acoustics, properties of matter, with application to the
life sciences.
To:
A general survey course for life science students. Statics,
kinematics, dynamics, work, energy and power, simple harmonic
motion, acoustics, properties of matter, thermal physics, with
application to the life sciences.
Rationale:
PHYSICS 101 and 102 are first-year survey courses for life science
students. It has become evident that PHYSICS 102 contained too many
topics and, as a result, the course was too crowded and hurried. On
the other hand, it was felt by professors teaching the courses that
PHYSICS 101 could accommodate a few extra topics without a significant
increase in pace.
The above changes are thus submitted to the faculty committee for
approval.
