Women's Studies Program

.................................................
On February 5th, the Women's Studies Coordinating Committee approved
the following changes in the prerequisites for W.S. 301, 302, and 303:
From: W.S. 100 and 60 credit hours
To: 60 credit hours
Rationale: The 301, 302, and 303 special topic courses were initially
designed to draw students with an interest in a particular
facet of women's studies but without any intention of
becoming a minor; these courses were also conceived as
service courses to provide a perspective on women in
particular fields such as law, or more generally, in the
professions. The prerequisite of W.S. 100 has often
discouraged students from taking courses they would like
to take, because at an advanced level (60 plus credits)
they have no desire or opportunity to take a 100-level
course. Alternatively, instructors have been approached
to waive the prerequisite of W.S. 100 and have found that
students with special interests but without W.S. 100 can
do very well in these courses. The time consumed
considering each case has, however, been onerous.
I hope the FIDS Curriculum Committee will approve and forward these changes.
