the Centre
for the Arts
At its meeting of October 10, the Centre for the Arts Curriculum
Committee passed a motion to reinstate the requirement that FPA. and
Dance major students be required to complete 24 hours of courses outside
the Centre for the Arts. Would you please consider this reinstatement
of requirement at the next meeting of the Faculty of Arts Curriculum
Committee.
Rationale
Both the Fine and Performing Arts major program and the Dance major
program, under the old curriculum, required that students complete 24
hours of courses outside the Centre for the Arts. When the new EPA.
and Dance major programs were revised, the 24 hour requirement was left
out in anticipation of Centre for the Arts students being required to
fulfill revised Faculty of Arts degree requirements, which included a
requirement for course work outside one's major area of study.
When Criminology, Canadian Studies and the Centre for the Arts were
relocated to the Faculty of Arts, students in these programs were
exempted from fulfilling the Faculty of Arts requirements if they
declared a major prior to 1987-3. For Centre for the Arts students
who start programs under the revised Centre curriculum and who declare
a major prior to the Fall of 1987, there is currently, therefore, no
requirement for courses outside the Centre. The reinstitution of the
24 hour requirement within the Centre's curriculum is intended to ensure
that this group of students must take courses outside the Centre. It is
understood that this 24 hour requirement is an interim measure.
The inadvertent lack of a requirement for non-EPA. course work was
not
?
only recently; students who have sought advice have been told of
the 24 hour requirement and have been told, also, that the Faculty of
Arts requirements were being revised. In order to avoid giving an
unfair advantage to students whose entry to the Centre's programs
occurs within the 'exempt' period, the reinstated 24 hour requirement
should be made effective as of Fall, 1985.

Please put the following Centre for the Arts curriculum changes on the agenda of
the next faculty of'Arts Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Meeting.
1.
?
Change in course number, title, description and pre-requisite for FPA. 232-3
From: EPA. 232-3 Scripting I
This course will introduce students to structuring films of all genres,
not only dramatic writing.
?
The material qualities of the medium, as well
as its historical manifestations, will be analyzed through class lectures,
screening of films, and exercises in writing and other media.
Prerequisite: Permission of the Department through interview is required.
Limited entry.
To: , FPA. 134-3 Fundamentals of Film
This course will introduce students to structuring films of all genres.
The material qualities of the medium, as well as its historical manifestations,
will be analyzed through class lectures, screening of films, and exercises in
.
?
writing and other media.
?
This course introduces scriptwriting, photographic?
composition, editing, sound mixing and non-literary scripting models.
Prerequisite: Permission of the Department through interview is required.
Limited entry.
Students who have completed FPA. 132 and 133 or 232 cannot take this course
for further credit.
Rationale: This course is the prerequisite for FPA. 230
?
The current higher
number is confusing to prospective students.
?
In addition, as an introductory
course, its status should be reflected in a 100-level number.
EPA. 132 and FPA. 133 have been dropped from the calendar, and EPA. 134
(previously 232) has replaced them as the first semester in the production
sequence. ?
As such, students who have previously completed EPA. 132 and 133 should?
not be given credit in a course which essentially replaces the previous first
year offering.
2. ' Change in prerequisite for EPA. 430-5
From: EPA. 234,331, and 332 or permission of the Department.
To: ?
FPA. 234, 331, 332 and permission of the Department.
Rationale: The change is prerequisite to include Department permission is necessary
insofar as it identifies the requirement for student presentation of intended
production work on the basis of a completed proposal/screenplay which is
presented during a student interview prior to the start of classes.
?
"Department
.
?
permission" is granted on the basis of joint film faculty evaluation of project
submissions.

3.
Change in prerequisite for EPA. 439-5 Directed Studies in Film
From: EPA. 430 or 431
To: ?
FPA. 430 or 431 or permission of the Department.
Rationale: This course is designed to provide an opportunity for
exceptional 'students to undertake further exploration of a variety of
cinematic.possjbilitjes available, including experimental technologies,
dramatic or documentary film, video production, scripting/dramatic
development, 'or critical/theoretical studies leading to the writing of
a publishable paper.
?
As such, the prerequisite should be flexible
enough to accommodate those interests which do not directly derive
from either EPA. 430 or 431 and could be assessed on the basis of
joint film faculty evaluation.
4.
Change in prerequisite for FPA. 230-3 Crafts of Film I
From:
?
FPA. 232, and 136 'or 137 and permission of the Department. This is
a limited entry course. Written permission of the Department is required
in advance of registration. Students should epect to pay a lab fee.
To: FPA. 134 and 136 or 137, and permission of the.department. This is
a limited entry course. Written permission of the Department
.
is required
in advance of registration. StUdents should expect to pay a laboratory
fee.
Rationale: The course number has been changed from FPA. 232 to 134 therefore
necessitating this change.
