AND RULES
Subject...
SENA....RM ....
?
Date.........
In December 1984, Senate approved a number of changes to
the organizational structure of the University, with the
changes to be effective September 1, 1985. These changes
also impact the composition of Senate as specified in the
University Act, Section 34(2). For example, there will no
longer be designated representation from the Faculty of
Interdisciplinary Studies and the Faculty of Engineering
Science (ie. two faculty members, one student from each)
while two faculty members and one student will be required
From the new Faculty of Applied Sciences. Under the rules
of Senate, the normal date of assumption of office in the
regular elections to Senate is June 1st, but given that
the representative structure of Senate will under go a
significant change on September 1, it would be appropriate
to consider some measures to allow an expeditious transition.
MOTION: "That Senate approve,
1)
for 1985, the date of assumption of office
in the regular elections to Senate be
September 1, 1985, and
2)
the term of office for those members whose
term is to expire on May 31, 1985 be extended
to August 31, 1985."

MEMORANDUM
From
SENATE COMMITTEE ON
ENPAAIilWLS.......................
FOR INFORMATION
• TO
SENATE
Date ..... ........JiJARY19..
In the first elections of faculty members to Senate, the members
were elected for such periods as would ensure that thereafter the
term of office of approximately one-third of those memberships
would terminate each year. Accordingly, members were elected for
three year, two year and one year terms. Over the years, there
have been a number of organizational changes that have affected this
ratio but for the most part it has been maintained. However, when
the structural changes are put in place in September 1985, this
ratio is lost. Under usual procedures, of the twenty four faculty
positions, 7 would expire in 1986, 5 would expire in 1987, and 12
would expire in 1988.
In order to return to the spirit of the ratio originally established,
the following procedure will be followed in the upcoming elections
to Senate:
Applied Sciences - Two members to be elected by that Faculty. The
S ?
candidate receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected
for a term of 3 years; the candidate receiving the second highest
number of votes shall be elected for a term of 2 years.
Members Elected from Faculties Jointly - Nine members to be elected.
The seven candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be
elected for terms of 3 years; the candidate receiving the next highest
number of votes shall be elected for a term of 2 years; and the last
elected candidate shall be for a term of one year. Under the terms
of the Act, at least one of these members must be from each of
Education and Applied Sciences; all other Faculties are represented.
These procedures will result in 8 faculty members being elected each
year.
