The formal course work will include four one-semester courses
of which POL. 801 is compulsory. Of the remaining three, students
will be required to choose at least two from among the core

851 and 852, and any one course listed under POLITICAL SCIENCE
GRADUATE COURSES. Students may also be encouraged to take additional
courses in Methodology and Languages.
Rationale for
Changes
The Department of Political Science had introduced its M.A. program
in 1976. The program, as it was felt by all concerned, had put great
emphasis on a larger course load and an extended thesis normally not
required for an M.A. degree. Those were also the findings of the PACUP
report which stated that in the Political Science Department, "Graduate
course requirements (6) are higher than in similar departments" and that
the number of courses required for the M.A. be considered with a view to
reducing course requirements from 6 to 4kzt^4

complete his M.A. program in a shorter period than was the case so far.
We expect the proposed changes to be more popular with the students. In
April 1984, an external review of the department also recommended that
the department seriously re-examinethe existing graduate program with a
view to increasing its enrollment.
