M.A. PROGRAM
Language Requirement
FROM: The Supervisory Committee shall be responsible for setting any French

not be examined separately, it being assumed that the knowledge required will
be demonstrated in the oral examination on the thesis.

examination consisting of the translation of a passage .of literature or criticism
in the particular language. A dictionary will be permitted. It is possible to

Ph.D. PROGRAM
Please add the following sub-heading
Language Requirement
All students registered in the Ph.D. Program will be required to demonstrate a
reading ability in one language other than English that is acceptable to the
students' supervisory committee. Ability will be determined by a time-limited
examination consisting of the translation of a passage of literature or
criticism in the particular language. A dictionary will be permitted. It is
possible to waive this requirement only with the permission of the Graduate
Program Committee.
RATIONALE: The existing policy of the department has meant in practice that
graduate students have not been required to know any language other than
English. Given that advanced studies in English literature necessitate the
knowledge of literature and criticism in several languages other than English,
and given that such knowledge is required by the better universities, the
department agreed to institute this modest requirement. This will add a real
academic benefit to our graduate program without introducing merely forma-
listic barriers in the student's path.
