GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
The course deals with three stages of curriculum development -- goal
setting, planning and evaluation. Related concepts (education, teaching)
and different perspectives on education will also be examined.
In specific terms, the objectives of the course are to:
(a)
provide knowledge and understanding about the main
educational concepts related to curriculum development;
(b)
encourage application of this knowledge and understanding;
(c)
engage discussion and reflection about perspectives on
curriculum development;
(d)
assist in developing skills in selected aspects of curriculum
development; and
(e)
examine distance learning materials using criteria developed in
the course.
I. ?
Introduction: The context for curriculum development
The intent will be to first define curriculum and then to discuss it in
relationship to concepts such as: education versus training/indoctrination,
learning and instruction, government policy, etc. The students will also
complete an instrument based on Eisner's perspectives on curriculum. 1
week
Session 1 - Course overview. CurriculUm and its relationship to other
concepts in education.
Reading Chapter 1 - Stenhouse. Sections from Hamm. For
further reading, see Hirst, The Logic of Curriculum.
0

Session 2 - Knowledge, teaching and the content of curriculum.
Read: Stenhouse, Chapters 2, 3 & 4. Also see selected parts
from Hamm.
Session 3 - Discussion and review of concepts discussed during the first
two sessions and reactions to readings. Different
conceptions of curriculum (Eisner) Complete instrument in
Chapter 2, Connelly et al.
2.
Goal Setting and Objectives
The relationship between the general aims of a society, general goals and
specific educational objectives will first be discussed. Then, the specifics
of preparing instructional objectives will be examined in the light of
Stenhouse's chapter, "The Objectives Model." This will then be contrasted
with what Stenhouse terms "The Process Model." The students will also
read and react to some of the criticisms of both. 1 week.
3.
Curriculum Design and the Planning of Learning Experiences
40 ?
This section will examine how objectives translate into learning
experiences. Topics for discussion include: curriculum planning and
sequencing, scope and sequence, models of teaching (Joyce and Weil)
and implementation. The students will also be introduced to some of the
conflicting views of how curriculum should be organized (see Shulman's
paper). These topics will all be related as much as possible to distance
education. 2 weeks.
4.
Curriculum Evaluation: Gaining Feedback From What we Do.
Review and build on what Tom has done. 1 week.
Note: I have ordered two books both of which are short. I plan to bring two
copies of about four others. In addition I will have duplicated and bring a
package of readings containing about 8 papers.
