The outcon es of the meetings are summarized on the following table.
On June 4, 1986, the Board met to review transcripts of students who were
considered by the Board in 1985. Dr. Harmon, Director of Health Services, was
invited to provide information to the Board concerning medical documents received
on behalf of appellants. The Board noted the need for consistency of information
provided in support of appeals, and the difficulty experienced in evaluating such
evidence. A statistical review of appeals received indicated that more males than
females appeal; that females -
are more successful in having their appeals sustained;
and that more internationalstudents submit appeals than do resident students,
proportionate to the overall student population.
The need for close monitoring of students who are readmitted
was
noted, as many
do well for their first semester upon returning to university, but get into difficulty
soon thereafter. In addition, the Board suggested that a document which clearly
sets out rules and regulations would be helpful.
More appeals were considered In 1986 than in 1985. A total of 119 appeals were
heard as compared with 90 in 1985.
