Report on
Undergraduate Extension Credit Courses
?
May 1, 1986- April 30, 1987
This report includes course and enrollment data for programs offered by the several
Faculties, departments, schools and centres through extension credit. Included are the On
Campus Evening (CE) program (which includes the Intersession (IS) and Summer Session
(SS) programs), SFU Downtown (DT), Faculty of Education Interior programs (ED),
Centre for Distance Education courses (CDE), the Senior Citizens' Program (SR), and the
Prison Education Program (PEP), as well as the various Certificate and Diploma programs.
In the period covered by this Report, 722 credit courses were offered through these
programs, with a total of 21,551 course enrollees. Enrollments in these programs
accounted for 29% of the total annualized FM for the university in 1986-87.
The following table outlines course offerings and enrollments by semester and by
extension program, with the final column showing the size of each program relative to the
whole:

Compared to 1985-86, there was a decrease of 2.9% in the total number of courses offered
through Extension Credit (from 744 in 1985-86 to 722 in 1986-87) and a 2% decrease in
the total number of enrollees during 1986-87 (from 21,940 enrollees to
21,551).*
*The 1985-86 Annual Report cited total enrollment as 22,359.
This
data included 469 OUCBC distance
education enrollments. In this 1986-87 Report, OUCBC distance education enrollments are not included in
overall enrollment data.

The
decreases in courses and enrollment is concentrated almost exclusively in the
86-2 semester, a time when the university as whole suffered a 10.6% decrease in FTE.
Within the extension program, the Campus Evening program showed the greatest drop in
86-2. The comparison is shown in Table 2.

It is important to note that in 86-2 courses were offered for the first time in the DTprogram
during the summer. With the
451
DT Summer Semester enrollments included in the 86-2
CE data the decrease in enrollees relative to 85-2 is only 211/6.
The Prison Education Program experienced a 20% decrease in enrollments
compared to the 1985-86 year (from 1255 to 1006). As in the case of the CE Program,
virtually
all
of the drop took place in the 86-2 semester. PEP Enrollments decreased by
36% in 86-2 compared to 85-2 while the 86-3 and 87-1 semesters were stable.
Data from the 87-2 semester indicates that CE course offerings are up 18% and
enrollments up
15%
compared to
.
86-2, the totals coming close to matching the 85-2 data..
Enrollments in the DT program remained stable for the 86-3 and 87-1 semesters,
the 23% increase in enrollments being due to the inaugeration of the DT Summer program
in 86-2.
Sixty-four undergraduate courses were available via distance education during
1986-87, an addition of seven compared to last year. The total number of offerings of
these courses was 141, nineteen more than in 1985-86. The total number of enrollees in
distance education courses was 4912, an increase of 2.35% relative to 1985-86. The
number of distance education students from the Open Univertsity Consortium also
increased from 468 to 557 relative to 1985-86.

Report on Credit-Free Activities
May 1, 1986 - April 30, 1987
This report presents the range of credit-free lectures, conferences, symposia,
seminars, media productions, professional development courses and other programs
reported by Faculties, Schools and Departments of the University. As well, this report
includes data on credit-free activities offered to faculty, students and staff by administrative
units on campus. In
all cases, the focus for credit-free activities at Simon Fraser University
is organizing educational opportunities for adults whose career, professional or personal
intellectual interests cannot be served by the regular credit program.
During the 1986/87 reporting period enrolments in the 393 credit-flee activities listed
totalled 17,186.
Several credit-flee activities undertaken by Faculties, departments, schools and other
units deserve special mention in this Report These activities are singled out either because
they are new for this reporting year or because they have been awarded some special
recognition.
A Program of Continuing Studies in Advanced Systems, initiated by the School of
Engineering Science, mounted 17 individual programs during this first year of operation,
enrolling
275
students. The program aims to provide members of the "high tech"
community with educational opportunities ranging from technology overviews to in-depth
professional courses. Instruction is provided by experts from SFU and the local
community, the U.S. and eastern Canada, and instructional technology ranges from
satellite video to live instruction. Programs will be offered in the coming year through the
Department of Communication and School of Computing Science as well as Engineering
Science.
The Centre for the Arts began a new Summer Institute program in 1986 designed for
advanced and professional artists who seek further development in their fields and the
opportunity to extend their
skills
in more than one discipline.
Intensive
workshops in
Voice, Dance, and Gamelan attracted 104
artists from across the country. The Gamelan
Workshop is the first of a series of summer studies offering Asian/Pacific cultural
Page 1

extensions. The Institute, which was strongly received in 1986, is being continued in
Summer 1987.

The Centre for the Arts also offered its first Vancouver Season this year, featuring five
individual programs dealing with film, music, drama, and contemporary issues in the arts.
Supported by a grant from the Vancouver Foundation, this program aims at audience
development for Vancouver arts and cultural organizations. Collaborating this year were
the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Vancouver Opera, the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, the
Western Front Pacific Cinematheque, and the Emily Carr College of Art and Design.
Registration for the five programs totalled 1,739.
An Advanced Interpreter Education Program, a CIDA-funded joint project of Canada
and the People's Republic of China, was established at Simon Fraser University
downtown in January 1987 under the sponsorship of the Centre for Canadian Studies. The
objective of the program, which is administered by the World University Service of
Canada, is to develop a resource of highly skilled interpreters in China who are intimately
familiar
with Canada, its economy, culture, and society. Twelve students from cities in the
Special. Economic Zones participated in the program in 1987-1. Courses developed for
them included a special section of Economics 101 Focusing on Canada and the World
Economy, a Resource Management course on Project Management, and a series of
Canadian Studies seminars. Students also enrolled in regular courses offered at
SFU/Downtown. The success of this initial program has resulted in the awarding of a
further contract from WUSC/CIDA to continue the program with a new group of students
in the 1987/88 academic year.
This was an active year for
Knowledge Network Programming-at
SFU, with
over
345
hours of SFU produced material being broadcast. Two SFU productions, The
Sentencing Dilemma
(Criminology) and
The Fashionable Image
(Communications) won AMTEC (Association for Media and Technology in Education in
Canada) awards and a new series, The Vision and
the Game: Making the
Canadian Constitution
(Political Science), was presented to the Speaker of the House
of Commons and is available to MP's through Parliament's demand video network
