I attach a report of the activities of the Senate Committee on Academic Planning
during the 1986 calendar year.

Under Senate rules, the Senate Committee on Academic Planning is required to
submit an annual report. This particular report covers the activities of SCAP for the
calendar year 1986.
As most of the recommendations flowing from SCAP are subsequently reviewed by
Senate, this report presents only highlights of the major proposals considered by
the Committee and actions or issues stemming therefrom.
ACTIVITIES DURING 1986
January, 1986 -- Approved in-principle the structure of a proposed program
in Earth Sciences. This program is currently before the Senate Graduate
Studies Committee for assessment and approval and will return to SOAP for
final approval before going to Senate.

February, 1986 -- Accepted the report of the Canadian Studies Review
Committee and approved in-principle changes to the Centre and its
programs as recommended by the Director.

April, 1986 --
(1)
Approved in-principle two program proposals for the Downtown
Campus. These called for the establishment of a Human
Performance Centre and the detailed planning of a program in
Criminal Justice Administration at either a Diploma or Masters Degree
level.
A proposed program in Industrial Statistics was referred back to the
Downtown Campus Planning Committee.
A proposed program for a Dramatic Filmmaking Workshop downtown
was not approved.

Reviewed letters of intent for new program proposals submitted to the
Funds for Excellence in Education.
(3)
Reviewed the issue of accepting Federal Government funding to offer
courses in the French language medium . Approval was given to the
Vice-President Academic to use Program of Studies in French grant
funds to offer courses at SFU on a one-year commitment basis only.

-Reviewed new program proposals submitted to the Funds for
Excellence in Education. These would be brought back to SCAP for further
discussion if funded and the regular planning process for new programs
would be followed.

July, 1986 --
Accepted a report on International Studies at Simon Fraser
University for information.

October,
1986 --
(1)
Approved proposals from the Faculty of Science to plan in detail new
Masters Degree programs in Biotechnology and Aquaculture at
Simon Fraser University. These had previously been submitted as
proposals to the Funds for Excellence in Education.
(2)
Approved and recommended to Senate a new Majors program in
Applied Physics.
(3)
Reviewed a proposal for a new Masters program in Tourism Policy
and Planning. A consultant's report on the structure of the proposed
program is being prepared prior to in-principle approval. This
program had been previously submitted to the Funds for Excellence
in Education.

Approved and recommended to Senate a Certificate Program -in
Liberal Arts.

Approved and recommended to Senate a new

Minor Program in
Quaternary Studies.
(6)
Rejected a proposal for a Certificate Program in Computer Literacy
and Programming in the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
7.
November,
1986 - Approved a proposal from the Faculty of Applied
Sciences to plan in detail a new Masters Degree program in Occupational
Sciences.
