Dear Professor Eckstedt:
Please find enclosed a proposal from the French Graduate Program for a
change in course requirements for the M.A. and
,
Ph.D.
These changes were approved unanimously by the French Graduate Program
Committee.
The representatives from the Graduate Programs of the Departments of
Linguistics, Spanish and LAS, and French met today and agreed to
give each other full autonomy - Re: calendar changes within the
Graduate Program of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics.
May I therefore request that you place our proposal on the agenda of the
next Faculty of Arts Graduate Studies Committee meeting?
We would very much appreciate it if we could meet the October 12 deadline
at the Dean of Graduate Studies office.

Credit and Research Requirements
The student is required to complete at least 20 hours of
graduate course work and a thesis of 10 hours on a topic acceptable
to the Supervisory Committee. In addition, all students are required
to take at least one graduate course in General Linguistics. The
student may chooseto take this course on a S/U basis. Moreover,
may be taken in another department of the
University, as part of his/her 20 hours of course work. The
students program of course work must be approved by the
Supervisory Committee.
Language Requirements
Students are expected to show some knowledge of at least
one language other than English and French.
M.A.
Credit and Research Requirements
The student is required to complete at least 20 hours of graduate
course work and a thesis of 10 hours on a topic acceptable to the
Supervisory Committee. Two graduate courses may be taken in
other departments of the University as part of the 20 hours of
course work. The students program of course work must be
approved by the Supervisory Committee.

Language Requirements
Students are expected to show some knowledge of at least
one language other than English and French.
a) for removing the reaulrement of a course in General Linguistics.

department, thereby requiring that the other department
accept a student from another department.

a student preparing a degree in French does not
necessarily have the prerequisite preparation in General
Linguistics expected by the Department of Linguistics for
graduate courses in that area.

In addition to the M.A. requirements the student must

from among offerings in French, Romance Linguistics, or General

1Linguistics. Moreover, one graduate course may be taken in another
department of the University as part of the Ph.D. program. The
student's program of course work must be approved by the
Supervisory Committee.
When the Supervisory Committee is satisfied that the
candidate is adequately prepared, the student may proceed to the
comprehensive examination and dissertation as laid down under the
program requirements above.
Language Requirements
In addition to a high degree of competence in French and
English, the student must demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the
structure of Latin and some competence in another language.
Ph.D.
Credit and Research Requirements
In addition to the M.A. requirements, the student must
complete at least 20 hours of graduate course work to be selected
from among offerings in French, except that one graduate course
may be taken In another department of the university as part of
these 20 hours. The student's program of course work must be
approved by the Supervisory Committee.
When the Supervisory Committee is satisfied that the
candidate is adequately prepared, the student is required to pass a
comprehensive examination (which may be oral and/or written)
before undertaking the dissertation.

Language Requirements:

An editorial change in fact since it was not a requirement although
I isted as such. With the approval of the Supervisory Committee,
students will still be able to take one or more courses in Romance
or General Linguistics.
