Medical Geography

Today we recognize that disease is a multiple
phenomenon which occurs only if various factors
coincide in time and space. The focus of interest
widens to encompass the relationship between various
factors of this complex and their respective
geographical environments. This can be called "medical
geography".
So wrote Jcues May, the most prominent medical geographer of
the twentieth century (Mayer,1982), in1950. Today medical
geography is a vibrant and growing specialty area within Anglo-
American academic geography. This course will introduce students
to traditions in medical geography and issues in health and
health care from a geographic perspective. Areas of concern will
include: 1) determinants of health; 2) distribution and diffusion
of disease; and-3) delivery of health care services.
Outline (tentative):
1.
Medical Geography - traditions, ideas and key players (May,
Hunter, McGlashan, Pyle and others)
2.
Contemporary models of health (May, Lalonde, White)
3.
Measuring health - rates, proportions, ratios
4.
Spatial variations in health status (1): global, national, and
local variations
5.
Spatial variations (2): life cycle, gender, housing,
employment, culture
5. Why these patterns? (1) The nuts and bolts of epidemiology
6.
Why. . . (2) influence of the environment
7.
Why... (3) influence of society - structured Inequalities?
8.
Why. . . (4) influence of individual behaviour and experience
9.
What is done? Canada's health care system: its aims, forms of
organization, and spatial expression
10.
Issues in health care delivery (1) utilization and
accessibility
11.
Issues. . . (2) locating health services
12.
Issues... (3) health care planning?
13.
Looking backward, looking forward - health and health care,
geography and social science
