SUBJECT: Calendar Changes

DATE: September 15, 1988
FROM:
"Any eligible student who wishes to register for course challenge in a given semester
must obtain an official Course Challenge Registration Form from the Office of the
Registrar, seek approval of the appropriate department chairman to register for course
challenge in that department, and return the completed form to the Office of the
Registrar by the fifth day following .com mencement of classes. Students who
pre-register for course challenge but fail to submit the completed form by the stated
deadline will be automatically cancelled from the challenged course.
Normally, a
student may not complete registration for course challenge after the end
of the fifth day of classes.
During the first five days of classes, a student may
change registration in course challenge from one course to another or to regular
enrollment in courses, but may not withdraw from course challenge without
substitution of regular course enrollment. After the fifth clay of classes, no further
course challenge changes will be permitted."

Rationale
.
?
New students entering the French program take a Placement Test which
advises them in general terms of what appears to be the most appropriate
course for them in the series 151, 201, 202, 206. During the first and
second weeks of attendance at this course

the course is in fact too simple or too hard and are consequently able to

If, however, they have been advised, for example, to go into FREN 202 and
have entered course challenges for FREN 151 and FREN 201, they may find
that FREN 202 is too difficult. Unless they recognize this during the first
two or three classes in FREN 202 (i.e. in the first week), they are
subsequently unable to change their course challenge. They therefore risk
failing FREN 202 and being unable to re-challenge later. Alternatively, the
FREN 202 may be too simple for them and they might prefer to register in
the FREN 206 and add the FREN 202 as challenge to the FREN 151 and 201.
By our making the deadline for registration of course challenges later,
these students would be in a position of making a more intelligent
decision and thereby avoid registering in a course that may possibly be too
hard or too easy.

RATIONALE
FREN 206-3 (Intermediate French) and FREN 301-3 (Advanced French) are
designed as consecutive semesters of French training. The intent of the
Department was always that FREN 206 be taken
p rior to FREN 301 by
students who had not yet achieved the level of competence required for
any Upper Division Course. (Students who have a level of competence
appropriate for FREN 301 are not required to taken FREN 206 and may
obtain challenge credit for it.) The modified wording makes explicit what
has always been Departmental policy.
