Re:
Requested information ?
Date: April 12, 1988
Senate has requested the SPCSAB address the issues of undergraduate entrance
scholarships for mature students and undergraduate entrance scholarships for students
entering diploma or certificate programs. This memo reports the establishment of a new
"Special Undergraduate Entrance Award", which should alleviate to some degree the
concerns raised by Senate on these matters. The terms of reference are listed below, alter
which I have appended some interpretive notes.
Special Undergraduate Entrance Award
1.
Value: $1,500 disbursed over 2 semesters, plus the standard $1,000 travel allowance
for those located outside the lower mainland.
2.
Number: up to 3 annually.
3.
Application deadline:
April 29 for tenure in May or September, October 3 for tenure in January.
4.
Eligibility:
W
?
?
Those entering SFU as undergraduates for the first time, who are not eligible for any
other undergraduate entrance scholarship. For example, those entering as "mature
students", those entering Diploma or Certificate Programs, and those seeking a
second undergraduate degree.
5.
Applications:.
a) Application form.
b).
Autobiographical essay (1,000 - 1,500 words).
c).
Three references.
d).
Resume of relevant information, including any information that would facilitate
comparison with applicants meeting more traditional criteria.
e).
Transcripts if available.
Notes
1.
This is termed an "award", not a scholarship, because for many applicants there may
not exist evidence to justify a "scholarship".
2.
Once a student has entered SFU as an undergraduate, he/she loses eligibility for all
entrance scholarship/awards.
3.
To our knowledge no other university has a similar award.
S ?
4. No awards will be given if no applicants meet the implicit criterion of scholarly
promise.
