I attach a report of the activities of the Senate Committee on Academic
Planning during the 1987 Calendar year.

 
INTRODUCTION
Under Senate rules, the Senate Committee on Academic Planning is required to submit
an annual report. This particular report covers the activities of SCAP for the calendar
year 1987.
As most of the recommendations flowing from SCAP are subsequently reviewed by
Senate, this report presents only highlights of the major proposals considered by the
Committee and actions or issues stemming therefrom.
ACTIVITIES DURING 1987
March, 1987 ...
Approved and recommended to Senate a proposal from the Vice-
President Academic to realign the three Senate Subcommittees charged with the
task of academic planning. The resulting structure would have the Senate
Committee on Undergraduate Studies and the Senate Committee on Graduate
Studies report to SCAP on all matters pertaining to academic planning.

April, 1987 ...
Received for information a detailed proposal from the Faculty of
Science for a Masters program in Aquaculture. This proposal had received in-
principle approval from SCAP in 1986 and is now before the assessment
committee of SCGS.

September, 1987 ...
Delegated authority to SCUS to:
• a)
?
consider waivers of the two semester time lag requirement prior to the first
offering of undergraduate courses
b)
approve practicum courses for use in co-op education programs
c)
conclude all matters dealing with proposals to revise existing courses
Approved the membership for a Task Force on University size.

November, 1987 ...
Approved and recommended to Senate the following:
(1)
that the CGPA be "sealed off" at the time that a degree or diploma is
awarded by Senate
(2)
that the minimum requirement for graduation for the general degree program
be a CGPA of 2.00 and for an honors degree program a CGPA of
3.00
with a
designation of "First Class" if the CGPA is
3.50
or higher.
(3)
that course slots be reserved in distance education courses for students who
do not have easy access to SFU
(4)
graduation grade point requirements for Certificate Programs
(5)
a proposal for a Certificate program in Chinese Studies
(6)
a Certificate program in Literacy Instruction
(7)
a Major program in Visual Arts to be offered in cooperation with Emily Carr
College of Art and Design
(8)
the establishment of separate departments of French, Linguistics and
Spanish and Latin American Studies, effective September 1, 1988.
(9)
an Extended Studies Diploma in Social Policy Issues.
Also,
in two meetings, SCAP approved and recommended to Senate a large
number of revisions and changes to the existing curriculum from all Faculties.

(1)
approved and recommended to Senate a statement of cooperation between
the Emily Carr College of Art and Design and SFU
(2)
approved the appointment of three new members to the Downtown Planning
Committee
(3)
approved and recommended to Senate that the Registrar be empowered to
limit the admission of new students to SFU on the basis of admission GPA
and on the basis of resources available to SFU.
Also in the course of the year, SOAP accepted verbal reports from:
(a)
the Vice-President Academic on the status of allocation of Funds for
Excellence in Education and of Centres for Excellence monies.
(b)
the Vice-President SFU at Harbour Centre on the progress of planning of
Downtown programs.
