documents constitute the annual report of the Senate Committee on Continuing

Report on ?
Credit-Free Activities
?
May 1, 1988 - April 30, 1989
This report lists the credit-free lectures, conferences, symposia, media productions,
professional development courses and other programs reported by Faculties, schools and
departments of the University. It also includes data on credit -free activities offered to the
faculty, students and staff by administrative units on campus.
During the 1988/89 reporting period, enrollments in the 598 credit-free activities
listed totalled 23,550. In 1987/88 there were 523 activities with 20,949 enrollments.
This year's report includes a range of credit-free activities sponsored by
departments from every Faculty of the University. In particular, the report shows
significant collaborative programming relationships both among departments and Faculties
within the University, and with business and industry, and with community organizations
and agencies. The diversity of programs and conferences offered reflects Simon Fraser
University's reputation for innovative program structure, design and content.
The School of Engineering Science initiated a new collaborative program in
telecommunications engineering, in partnership with B.C. Tel and the University of
California at Los Angeles (UCLA). A two and one-half year program, it is aimed at
bringing 120 B.C. Tel engineers up to date in recent technological developments in
telecommunications. The School's program, "Management Skills in Advanced
Technology", initiated in 1987, won the 1989 Distinctive Professional Development
Program award from the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education.
The "Writing and Publishing Program", sponsored by the departments of English
and Communication, joined with the Society for Technical Communication and the Pacific
Rim Book Fair Society in offering two major conferences, and designed specialized
courses for ten agencies and corporations, including the Workers Compensation Review
Board and Price Waterhouse.

"The Advanced Interpreter Education Program", a CIDA -funded joint project of
Canada with the People's Republic of China established in 1987, continued through the
sponsorship of the Centre for Canadian Studies and, in addition to its academic program,
now includes field placements with
35
businesses in British Columbia.
Program Advisory Committees, formed to bring together University and
community expertise for program development, this past year included 107
representatives from the community and 117 representatives from departments and
Faculties.
Joint program initiatives within the institution included: the Faculty of Business
Administration and the David Lam Centre for International Communication offered a
program entitled "The Second Wave: Japan's Global Challenge to Financial Services"; the
Institute for the Humanities together with History and-Mathematics and Statistics offered
"Mathematical Practitioners in Ancient Rome"; Women's Studies and Engineering Science
offered a seminar for women innovators called "From Idea to Market"; and Alumni
Relations, the Institute for the Humanities and the Department of English offered a travel
study course, "Oxford and Wessex", which allowed for both credit and non-credit
participation.

The expanded facilities provided by the opening of Simon Fraser University at
Harbour Centre during the third semester covered by this report (89/1) allowed for the
bringing together of many courses and programs that had been offered in scattered
locations throughout the community previously. These included Natural Resource
Management's "Foundation Program in Tourism Management", Kinesiology'
s
"Occupational Health and Safety" program, and English and Communication's "Writing
and Publishing Program". In addition, new programs began, such as "Research Skills for
Health Care Professionals" (sponsored by Gerontology and the Lion's Gate Medical
Research Foundation) and "Organizing and Managing a Public Company" (sponsored by
Business Administration and the Vancouver Stock Exchange). The new campus has also
enabled the University to provide facilities, advice and assistance to 40 cultural and
educational events sponsored by a variety of community organizations and agencies.
During this reporting period, the large lecture theatres and conference centre at Harbour
Centre were not available, and the diversity and number of activities these new facilities
allow is steadily growing.

Major national and international conferences continued to bring recognition to
Simon Fraser University during the reporting period. These included the School of
Criminology's "National Symposium on Lotteries and Gambling", the Faculty of
Education's "National Conference on Teaching Law in the Schools", the Department of
Biological Science's "Second International Behavioral Ecology Conference", Mathematics
and Statistics' conference on "Scientific Careers for Young Women", and the Canadian
Centre for Studies in Publishing conference on "Teaching Publishing".
