In addition to meeting all University entrance requirements, applicants
graduating from secondary school must meet the following requirements:
Algebra 11
English 11
--* Chemistry 11
Language 11 (not beginners Language 11)
Physics 11
English 12
Algebra 12
Two additional academic grade 12 subjects selected from:
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Geology,
Geometry, Physics, Probability and Statistics
A minimum average of C+ calculated on all of the above subjects.
A minimum grade of C+ In each of the above four grade 12 subjects.
b) Applicants from Post-Secondary Institutions and other Categories
For entry to the Faculty from Colleges, other Universities, other post-
secondary institutions and for other categories the current regulations
for entry into the University apply, as appropriate.
For entry to Faculty from within SFU, a C.G.P.A. of at least 2.0 is
required.
In addition to the above, all students seeking admission to the Faculty
are required to have a grade of C+ or greater In each of four courses that
are at least equivalent to: English 12 and Algebra 12 or (MATH 100)
and to two courses selected from Biology 12, Chemistry 12 (or CHEM
101), Computer Science 12, Geography 12 (or GEOG 100), Geology 12
(or GEOG 112), Geometry 12 (or MATH 113), Physics 12 (or PHYS 100),
Probability and Statistics 12.

The following statement should appear Immediately below the
requirments in part (a) above:
Students who are interested in the life sciences are strongly advised to
include Biology 12 in their secondary school programs. Students who plan to
enter science programs (including Biological Sciences, Biochemistry,
Chemistry, Kinesio!ogy and Physics) are strongly advised to include Algebra 12
(with a grade of B or better), Chemistry 12 and Physics 12 in their secondary
school programs. If a student lacks any of these courses, substitute courses
may be taken at Simon Fraser University, but degree completion could be
delayed.

Date: October 3, 1989 ?
Science from High School
== ====== ? = ======= ====== = ===== ====== =
After further discussions and consideration of feedback from faculty and others, at our
meeting on July 12, 1989, the Faculty of Science Undergraduate Curriculum Committee agreed
to the following admission requirements for students entering from secondary
school:
In addition to meeting all University entrance requirements, applicants
graduating from secondary school must meet the following requirements:
of Algebra 11
F English 11 ?
-. Chemistry 11
—p
Language 11 (not beginners Language 11)
—35Physics 11
/English 12
t.,
Algebra 12
---I> Two additional academic grade 12 subjects selected from:
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Geology,
Geometry, Physics, Probability and Statistics
- ?
A minimum average of C+ calculated on all of the above
?
subjects.
A minimum grade of C+ in each of the above four grade 12 subjects.
Why should the Faculty of Science have its own entry requirements? What's wrong with
our current requirements? The Committee addressed these questions and many others in
considering entry to the Faculty.
At the present time our Faculty can accommodate a significant increase in enrolment, but
looking ahead we think that enrolment will have to be controlled and thus it makes sense to have a
mechanism in place so that it can be used in a reasonable and orderly way when required.
Our current regulations for entry to the University from High School require no specific
grade 12 subjects other than English 12 (although certain grade 12 subjects are"strongly
advised" for students planning to enter Science). The Committee felt that more specific
requirements were appropriate for direct entry to the Faculty.
The Committee also agreed that there is the perception (just ask your neighbours) that
S.F.U. has lower standards than U.B.C. because it is easier to get into S.F.U.. Our Committee
was unanimous in the view that our entry requirements should not in any way be perceived to be
lower than U.B.C.'s. We want to attract the best students.
? -
.
Our proposed entry requirements to the Faculty of Science are more specific than the
current University entry with regard to course selection. We regard Chemistry 11, Physics 11 and
Algebra 12 as the foundation for entry to our Science Faculty. In addition, because we want
prospective students to have a greater exposure to science or math in school than our current
regulations require, we would require two grade 12 subjects from a restricted list. (The Committee
4.

agreed that In general too much university credit for essentially grade 12 material is currently
available to students
at
the University.)
The Committee decided to set up two minimum grade requirements:
A C+ average over all grade 11
and 12
subjects listed, and
(I)
?
A C+ grade for
aati
of the four required grade 12 subjects
The Committee felt that minimum grade requirement (I ) was appropriate In that It provided
an overall evaluation of ,a student's performance and potential and perhaps more Importantly It may
encourage students to'do well in grade 11 where the foundation to study in science is laid. The
Committee noted that U.B.C. currently uses requirement (i).
We originally (March 23/89) proposed a minimum grade of B for Algebra 12. This was
reconsidered and reduced to a C+ on the basis that a B grade may be unnecessarily high for
students entering the non-physical sciences. The Committee then agreed that a minimum grade
of C+ for all four grade 12 courses (requirement ii) is appropriate for direct entry into the Faculty in
that it will ensure ade
q
uate preparation in English and Math and will require acceptable
performance in at least two Grade 12 science or science related subjects.
The Inclusion
of
a Language 11 requirement was again discussed. The Committee felt a
Language 11 requirement (particularly French) was an appropriate element in our students'
education. It was also noted that this Is a university entrance requirement and is also a
requirement at U.B.C.(U.B.C. does not accept beginners language 11).
We will also be including statements strongly advising students entering life sciences or
the physical sciences to include certain courses in their grade 12 programs.

MEMORANDUM

To: C.H.W. Jones, Dean
Faculty of Science
Subject: Entry to Faculty
From: R.F. Fnndt, Chair
Faculty of Science,
Undergraduate Curriculum
Committee
Date; September 29, 1989
At a meeting of the Faculty of Science Undergraduate Curriculum Committee on
September 27, 1989 the following motion was passed:
"For entry to the Faculty from Colleges, other Universities, other post-secondary
institutions and for other categories the current regulations for entry into the
University apply,
as
appropriate.
For entry to Faculty from within SFU, a C.G.P.A. of at least 2.0 is required.
In addition to the above, all students seeking admission to the Faculty are
required to have a grade of C+ or greater in each of four courses that are at
least equivalent to: English 12 and Algebra 12 or (MATH 100) and to two
courses selected from Biology 12, Chemistry 12 (or CHEM 101), Computer
Science 12, Geography 12 (or GEOG 100), Geology 12 (or GEOG 112),
Geometry 12 (or MATH 113), Physics 12 (or PHYS 100), Probability and
Statistics 12."
The C.G.P.A. of 2.0 above is consistent with the GPA required from the
Colleges, etc., and the
2.5
(C+) is consistent with the level required of students
entering from High School.
I suggest this motion along with our proposed entry requirements from High
School be circulated to Faculty as you deem appropriate.
