RE:

Joint Honours - Arts
?
DATE: November 8, 1989
The proposal before SCAP regarding Joint Honours programmes
in the Faculty of Arts has no attached rationale. Please
distribute this at the meeting to support the proposal.
The rationale for proposing general regulations for Joint
Honours in the Faculty of Arts is twofold. First, we have
received
.
a proposal to establish Joint Honours programmes
with one of our interdisciplinary programmes and several
departments. in Arts. As this is a small programme it seemed
more reasonable to establish General Guidelines so any
student who wished to pursue Joint Honours would be covered
by one set of regulations. It also seemed desirable to have
a minimum set of requirements that all such programmes must
meet. Secondly, from time to time, we have brilliant
students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary graduate
programme, and wish to prepare for this by completing
honours work in more than one discipline. At the moment,
the only option open to such people is double honours, which
requires at least a hundred Upper Division hours and takes
upwards of a hundred sixty hours to complete. The Faculty
approved guidelines for Joint Honours in the late seventies,
and forwarded them to the Registrar, who did not wish to
pursue the paper until the University set up some general
guidelines. This unfortunately never occurred.
