Senate Appeals Board Annual Report 1988
March 7, 1989
Page 2
1988 was a difficult year for the Senate Appeals Board. With the adoption of
enrolment limitations for new students, limits were imposed on the readmission of
former students who had been required to withdraw for reasons of weak performance
or repeated withdrawals. A limit of 25 readmissions was set for 88-3, yet some 114
appeals were received. Similarly for 89-1, 79 appeals were received but only 20
students were to be readmitted. These numbers convinced the SAB to suspend its
normal procedures. Most students who had requested to appear in person to
support
their appeals were given decisions based only on the written evidence. This change
of procedure was unpopular with some member of the University community, yet it
would have been scarcely possible to endure the many days of hearings required to
hear each appellant individually.
In other respects, the SAB meetings went smoothly enough. Members have noticed
an increase for a second year in the numbers of students seeking a "transcript clean-
up" prior to applying to a graduate program.
In addition to the appeals shown on the attached table, the Director of Admissions and
Liaison handled cases through delegated authority as follows:
