SUBJECT: Enrolment in Graduate

DATE: 10 November 1988
Courses
Based on experience elsewhere, I would like to propose a
minimum criterion for Special students, Qualifying students and
undergraduate students (including students in Post-Baccalaureate
Diploma programs) to enrol in graduate courses:
"Special graduate students, Qualifying students and
undergraduate students (including Post-Baccalaureate Diploma
students) normally may enrol in graduate courses only if
their cumulative grade point averages are at least. 3.00. In
addition, the permission of the instructor is required in
each case."
The purpose of this proposal is to ensure that the
appropriate academic standards and control over enrolments are
maintained. At present, there is no statement in the calendar
about who may enrol in graduate courses. The possibility exists
that poorly prepared students may enrol and create a tendency to
lower the level of discourse. In some courses, enrolment must be
limited; at present, there is no mechanism to control the number
of non-graduate students. The proposed regulation gives the
instructor that control.
This matter will be. on the agenda of the Senate Graduate
Studies Committee.
