The following actions were taken:
1)
Adult Secondar y
School Graduation DiDloma - SUAB 187:
The Adult Program is a 7 course version of the normal 13-16 course graduation program in which electives
and some breadth requirements are waived in recognition of the maturity of the students enrolled. Some
institutions had been using the program to provide rapid B.C. graduation for international students who were
not necessarily mature in age.
SUAB discussed this matter extensively and a sub-committee was assigned to report back with
recommendations. Members felt that such streamlined programs were not suitable for students of the usual
age range encountered in the school system: they did not conform with the Ministry's own goals and
"Mandate Statement" with respect to breadth of education or the artistic, cultural and social goals of the school
system. These goals were felt to be valid for international students as well as for resident students.
Consequently, SUAB decided to uphold an earlier decision to not accept graduates of the Adult Program who
are under 19 years of age.
2) Advanced Interpreter Education Program SUAB 188
In order to admit students to a credit component of the Advanced Interpreter Education Program, offered
at Harbour Centre to limited numbers of international students (mostly degree-holders from the PRC), SUAB
agreed to delegate to the Director of Admissions, authority for waiving normal admission requirements and
procedures for students on the recommendation of the director of that program.
3)
Transfer Credit Evaluation B.C. Private Colleges - SUAB 190
The Td-University Presidents' Council Transfer Credit Sub-Committee began evaluation of private
transferring colleges in 1989. Columbia College and Coquitlam College received Stage I approval, clearing
the way for course by course articulation of courses. This process was welcomed by SUAB, as it provided a far
better measure of quality and reliability than earlier procedures for granting credit to private institutions.
4)
Academic Evaluations of Student Performance
End-of-semester reviews were held to consider cases referred by the Director of Admissions and Liaison.
SUAB decided that:
unless additional information extending beyond the information on the unofficial student record is
available for students who are classified as Ineligible - only F or N grade, SUAB will not consider changing the
student's standing; and
b) unless additional information extending beyond the information on the unofficial student record is
available for students who are classified as Ineligible - withdrew three times, SUAB will not consider changing
the student's standing.
In addition, it was agreed that students who have been allowed by SUAB to continue on academic
probation and who intend to attend classes on the Burnaby campus, be required to seek advice from the
Academic Advice Centre before or during the first week of classes of the next semester.

5) Readmisslon quotas for RTW's
SUAB requested that the Senate Committee on Enrolment Management Planning lift the restrictive
semester quotas on the numbers of former students to be readmitted under appeal conditions after serving
their periods of involuntary withdrawal. This matter had been brought forward from the Senate Appeals Board.
Although no format response was received, strict quotas were not applied after 89-2.
6)
Courses In the Adult Basic Education Provincial Diploma - SUAB 194
ABE Provincial Diploma courses were examined and found to be generally equivalent to B.C. Grade 12
courses in the respective discipline.
7)
Faculty of Science Admission Requirements from B.C. Secondar
y
School and from
Post-Secondary institutions - SUAB 196
SUAB approved admission requirements for the Faculty of Science. These were subsequently approved
by Senate.
8)
"Year 2000" - Ministr y
of Education Draft Curriculum Plan - SUAB 197
SUAB considered a draft curriculum plan-
'Year 2000"
published by the Ministry of Education and formed
a sub-committee to formulate a response. A response was sent early in 1990.
