SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
Memorandum
DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES
FROM: B. P. Clayman
SUBJECT: Degree Designations
?
DATE: October 26, 1990
In my recent study of degree requirements, I was reminded of the existence of
several parenthetical' Master's degree designations, including the
M.A. (Criminol-
ogy). It is unclear to me why such degree designations exist. It may be that the
reasons are lost in antiquity or there may be valid reasons of which I am
unaware.
Unless there are valid reasons to retain this designation, I would like to eliminate
it and replace with a simple
M.A.
I ask that your School consider this question
and that you convey their response to me. I would, of course be to pleased to
discuss the matter with you, if you wish.

STUDIES OFFICE
.
DATE: ?
9 November 1990
TO: ?
Dr Bruce Clayman, Dean of Graduate Studies
FROM:
?
John Lowman, Graduate Program Director
SUBJECT: Degree designations:
M.A. (Criminology)
I had an opportunity to raise your question about the degree designation
M.A.
(Criminology)
(memo dated 26 October) at a Faculty meeting on 8 November. After
some checking with various Faculty and Support staff, I did not come up with any
explanation for the origin of this designation. After a short discussion at the Faculty
meeting, a vote was taken to see if anyone objected to the removal of the
parenthetic
Criminology.
Fourteen people did not object; one person abstained. We
are, it seems, ready to bid the parenthetic
Criminology
degree designation farewell.

This is to advise that we have decided to keep the
degree as M.A. rather than changing it to M.Sc., but
the added "(Comm)" can be removed.
