S.91-iO
SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
MEMORANDUM
To: Senate ?
From: R. Saunders, Chair - SUAB
Subject: Associate in Science ?
Date: 1990 10 17
On 5 July 1990, SUAB approved a proposal received from the Faculty of
Science, by approving the following:
Motion
To approve the admission of students from Fraser Valley, Douglas
and Kwantlen Colleges who have completed the Associate in
Science Diploma subject to the following minimum conditions:
-

6 credits in English
?
-
at least 6 further credits in a discipline other than biological
sciences, chemistry, physics or mathematics
at least 36 further credits in biological sciences, chemistry,
physics or mathematics, with at least 20 credits in one of these
disciplines
at least 6 further credits in any discipline
a minimum CGPA of 2.50.
All of the above courses and all courses included in the CGPA
must transfer to Simon Fraser University.
Dr. Cohn Jones, Dean of Science, has held discussions with Douglas, Fraser
Valley and Kwantlen Colleges and has negotiated special admission and
transfer status for students who complete the Associate in Science Diploma at
one of these colleges.
The proposal does not affect the admissibility of students, since all students who
present the above list of transfer courses would be readily accepted as transfer
students, even if their g.p.a.s were lower than 2.50. However, the Faculty of
Science and the colleges involved are of the opinion that explicit recognition by
S.F.U. of the Associate in Science Diploma will encourage college students to
enter science programs and to complete 2 year science diploma programs
offered by these colleges. Retention of science students in second year
programs has been low in some colleges.
Students who receive this Associate in Science Diploma and who transfer to
S.F.U. may be required to take further prerequisite courses to enter certain
major or honours programs, as specified by the Faculty of Science.
In order for this recognition to be published in the Calendar, Senate's approval
of the above above SUAB motion is respectfully requested.
