ANNUAL
REPORT - 1991
INTRODUCTION
This report covers the activities of the Senate Committee on Academic Planning
for the calendar year 1991. Most recommendations of SCAP go forward to Senate
for information or further action. Therefore this report presents in summary
form the major actions of the Committee.
PROGRAMS APPROVED FOR FURTHER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
When a new program is being considered, it is expected to be forwarded to SCAP for
review at an early stage so that information about the program can assist in the
planning process. This 'can also prevent the development of program plans which are
considered beyond the scope and mission of the University. This initial approval
process is entitled "approval for further planning and development".
Master of Arts in Gerontology - Faculty of Arts

Non-Credit Certificate in Cross-Cultural Management and Communication
APPROVED PROGRAMS NOT YET STARTED
Master of Publishing - awaiting the allocation of resources before being implemented.
Department of Earth Sciences - at the end of 1991, tentative plans were to begin
recruiting in 1992/93 with the program planned to start in September 1993.

CURRICULUM REVISIONS
SCAP received and forwarded material on a variety of curriculum revisions which had
been thoroughly reviewed and approved by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies and the Senate Graduate Studies Committee.
Faculty of Applied Sciences: 4 sets of submissions from SCUS, and 4 from SGSC
Faculty of Arts: 16 sets of submissions from SCUS, and 5 from SGSC
Faculty of Business Administration: 2 sets of submissions from SCUS, and 2 from SGCS
Faculty of Education: 1 submission from SCUS, and 3 from SGSC
Faculty of Science: 4
sets
of submissions from SCUS, and 3 from SGSC
SCAP also approved the removal of the degree designations which had previously been
attached in parentheses to the title of some Masters degrees.
ENROLMENT MANAGEMENT (SCEMP)
Undergraduate Admission Targets 91/92 and revisions
SCEMP recommended targets for enrolments for 1991/92 based on the Access program
projections, and in the Fall revisions to the enrolment targets for the summer semester
1992 were made, based on enrolment trends in the summer and fall 1991.
PLANNI NG
Challenge 2001
President Saywell met with SCAP in February 1991 to present The President's Strategic
Plan: Challenge 2001. SCAP endorsed the general directions for the University's
development contained in the document.
Environmental Studies Task Force
The Task Force examining the possible development of an Environmental Studies
program reported in October. After discussion and consultation with the chairs of the
departments/ schools most closely related to this initiative, SCAP recommended that
the School of Resource and Environmental Management be charged with developing
an undergraduate program proposal.

Applied Health Sciences Task Force
A Task Force will be established to advise the University on program directions and
strategies.
Partnership with the Universit
y
College of the Fraser Valley
In October, Fraser Valley College invited the University to be its partner in the
development of degree completion programs in Arts starting in September 1992, and
Science starting in September 1993. Since then, planning work has been undertaken
in connection with this partnership and the basic framework of the partnership
agreement has been developed and approved by SCAP and Senate. Additional
agreements covering other aspects of the partnership are to be forwarded for approval
as they are completed.
Organizational Changes of Units
The Natural Resource Management Program was changed to the School of Resource
and Environmental Management, and the Women's Studies Program was changed to
the Department of Women's Studies, in both cases to reflect the maturity of the
disciplines and the units.
