REPORT ON UNDERGRADUATE EXTENSION CREDIT COURSES
MAY
1, 1990-APRIL 30, 1991
?
41
This report includes course and enrollment data for programs offered by Faculties,
departments, schools and centres through extension credit. In the period covered by this
report, 978 credit courses were offered through extension credit, with a total of 30,241
enrollees.
The number of Certificate and Diploma programs is growing with four new programs
being introduced within the last year (Native Studies Research, Family Studies, Actuarial
Mathematics and Women's Studies) and several more proceeding through the approvals
process. The Liberal Arts Certificate Program continues to be by far the largest with over
400 student enrollments in the 91-1 semester.
Faculties and departments responded to the demand for courses and the opportunity to
assist the University in meeting its access target through increased programming at Harbour
Centre. The increase was from 170 courses with 3,996 enrollments 1989-90 to 186
courses and 4,424 enrollments in 1990-9 1.
Overall, the extension credit programs have grown at approximately the same rate as
other programs in the University, remaining relatively constant for the last two years at
approximately 28% of total undergraduate enrollment when measured by FTE's.

Table 3 lists enrollments in the eight 'core' diploma programs (data included in Post
Baccalaureate Diploma Program statistics):
Certificate Programs consist mainly of lower division courses and are generally equivalent to one-half and one full
year of university study (between 18 and 30 credit hours).
The Post Baccalaureate Diploma offers those who hold a Bachelor's or advanced degree the opportunity to develop and
follow a program of individualized study not usually provided by graduate or professional degrees. Students with
faculty advisors identify goals and develop a program of study. It is comprised of 30 credit hours of third and fourth
year courses, and some graduate courses if appropriate.
Core post baccalaureate diploma programs offer a planned course of study in several fields.

REPORT ON CREDIT-FREE AC1V1TIES ?
MAY 1, 1990-APRIL 30,1991
This report lists the credit-free lectures, symposia, conferences, professional development
programs and other courses reported and sponsored by Faculties, schools and departments of
the University. It also includes data on credit-free activities offered to faculty, students and
staff
by administrative departments of the University.
During the 1990-91 reporting period, enrollments in the 856 credit free activities totalled
40,000.
There has been steady growth in both the number of offerings and the number of participants
in programs offered by the Faculty of Applied Sciences, particularly those offered by the School
of Engineering Science which more than doubled the number of events from 26 to 59 and
showed an enrollment increase of 665 participants (from 658 to 1323). During this reporting
period, 118 BC Telephone engineers, who began their studies in 1989, continued in the
Certificate Program in Telecommunications Engineering. This was the first non-credit
certificate program approved by Senate and it consists of eight 40-hour courses. In addition, the
Distinguished Advanced Research and Technology Seminars, sponsored by the School of
Engineering Science, attracted a total of 550 people to 23 lectures.
The David Lam Centre for International Communication has experienced a steady growth in
program activity, and enrollments in the immersion language cross-cultural communication
courses in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and Japanese reflect the business community's
growing involvement in international markets and their need fOr university programs to
increase their effectiveness. The Pacific Regional Forum on Business and Management
Communication
attracted 488 people to 9 forums.
The President's Faculty Lectures at the Halpern Centre, which were established to build on
the tradition of scholarly exchange and to encourage this exchange across disciplines, achieved
a total audience of 540. Dr. Robin Barrow, Dr. Rosalie Tung, Dr. John Borden, Dr. James Cavers,
Dr. Richard Lipsey, and Dr. Heribert Adam were the six faculty members invited to inaugurate
the series.
Several significant conferences took place under the auspices of SF0 departments and
Faculties. The Faculty of Education hosted 12 conferences and symposia. The Western Canada
Conference on Workplace Innovations (115 registrants) sponsored by the School of Kinesiology;
the Annual Scientific and Educational Meeting of the Canadian Association of Gerontology (125
registrants) hosted by the Gerontology Research Centre; the 45th Annual Conference of the
Correctional Educational Association (790 registrants) sponsored by the Institute for the
Humanities; the 29th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Zoologists (313 registrants)
sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences; and the Mathematics Enrichment
Conference (115 registrants) sponsored by the Department of Mathematics are typical of the
range of conferences which took place at SF0 last year.
Large audiences attended public lecture series and events at the Harbour Centre campus.
The School for the Contemporary Arts' "Arts at Night" and "Music at Noon" series comprised
18 of 31 events sponsored by the School and attracted 2000 enrollments. The "BC Directors and
their Films" lectures drew an audience of 300. The Institute for the Humanities, through the J.S.
Woodsworth Resident Scholar Program, sponsored two lectures and a symposium which were
attended by 550 people. Audiences for the Thursday evening lectures at Harbour Centre grew
steadily as awareness of the Harbour Centre campus as a cultural and intellectual facility
became more widespread.
?
50,

I
Another area of substantial growth is that of Educational Telecommunications. This year the
University offered 274.75 hours of programming to 7499 viewers enrolled in 85 distance
education courses (there were, of course, many more viewers but we do not have access to those
statistics). This represents an increase of 35 hours of programming and 4360 viewers. Two
projects received an Award of Merit from the Association for Media Technology in Education in
Canada: "Imagining Canada", with Dr. Edward Gibson, Geography, and "Midwifery and the
Law", with Dr. Brian Burch, Criminology.
Publications which resulted from programs and projects developed through Continuing
Studies included:
Preventing and
Responding to Northern Crime
(The Northern Justice Society,
edited
by Dr. Curt Taylor Griffiths) and the
Yearbook of Correctional Education 1990
(Institute for
the Humanities).
Programs and activities which gained recognition for the University through the receipt of
national distinguished program awards from the Canadian Association for University
Continuing Education were: "Research Skills for Health Care Professionals" (sponsored by the
GerontologyResearcheentre), the Canadian-Centre-for Studies-in-Publishing, and-the-'45th- - -
International Conference of the Correctional Education Association".
