Senate Committee on Continuing Studies
ANNUAL REPORT

May 1,1992-April 30, 1993
This report describes actions of the Senate Committee on Continuing Studies, the activities
of the extension credit and distance education programs, highlights several areas of program
development by Faculties, departments and schools at Simon Fraser University, and
summarizes course and enrolment data for extension credit programs and credit-free
programs.

Credit-Free Program Approval
The SCCS approved and forwarded to SCAP proposals for four new credit-free certificate
programs: Business Writing Certificate Program, Technical Writing Certificate Program, and
Publishing Certificate Program, proposed by the Writing and Publishing Program University
Advisory Committee (Senate Paper S.93-28); and the Certificate Program in Management
proposed by the Faculty of Business Administration (Senate Paper S.93-28). These programs
were approved by Senate May 17, 1993 and have been implemented.
Statistics
Detailed statistical information on all extension credit programs and credit-free programs is
available through the Office of Analytical Studies.
Extension Credit Courses and Enrolments
Extension credit programs include the Burnaby Campus Evening Program (including
Intersession and Summer Session), SFU at Harbour Centre undergraduate programs, the
Faculty of Education Interior Programs, the SCES/SFtJ Program, distance education courses,
the Senior Citizens Program, and the Prison Education Program, as well as the various
certificate and diploma programs. In the period covered by this report, 945 courses were
offered through these programs with a total of 29,577 course enrollees. Enrolments in these
programs accounted for 20% of the total undergraduate annualized FIE for the University in
1992-93.
Compared to 1991-92, there was a decrease of 6.7% in the total number of courses offered
through Extension Credit (from 1,013 in 1991-92 to
945
in 1992-93) and a
5.9%
decrease in
the total number of enrollees in 1992-93 (from 31,421 to 29,577).
One hundred undergraduate courses were available by distance education during 1992-93.
Course offerings totalled 223, with course enrollees of 10,332, an enrolment decrease of 1%
relative to 1991-92.
Eighteen certificate programs involved 2,261 enrollees; post-baccalaureate' diploma

programs had 1,038 enrollees. Ninety-eight people attended classes through special audit in
1992-93.

Australia, Fiji, Malaysia, Kingdom of Tonga, St. Vincent;.Nigeria,,Bahamas,,Maldives,,,
Vanuatu, Philippines, Tuvalu, South Africa, Norway, and Papua New Guinea.

Summer Instilutefor Union Women
The 1992 Institute, sponsored by the University and College Labor EducationAssociation,
the AFL/CIO Department of Education, and the Canadian Labour Congress, andhostedbythe:
B.C. Federation of Labour and SFU's Labour Program, was the first of theannuallInstitutesto
be held in Canada.
The Institute is a week-long, largely residential program of skills-building andinfomiatibn.
sharing courses. Two hundred and fifty women, sponsored by. their, unions:
1992 program of 30 courses.
Course for International Graduate Teaching Assistants
At the request of chairs in the Faculty of Science, a cross-cultural communiéation course,.
for graduate non-native English speaking teaching assistants was dëveiopedl and piliDt-tested..
The course is aimed at enhancing graduate students' ability to communicate int English to
perform their duties as teaching assistants and to participate fully ini lectures and seminars
required by their degree programs. Following the pilot,, a revised
,
course was. offerethn the
Spring of 1993 with further offerings planned for Summer
and
Fall. The response has
:
been
positive and demand for the program continues.

City Program
There were four City Program events during the reporting period:
Architecture in the City:
People and Places; Neighbourhoods in the 1990s; Conserving Architectural Terra Cotta;
and
Seismic Retrofit of Heritage Buildings in Vancouver
(with the Department of Geography).
The City Program, which is based at the Harbour Centre campus, focusses on urban issues
and concerns. Activities include technical discussions, site visits, seminars and public lectures,
and are sponsored by the University's interdisciplinary City
Program Advisory Committee.
Centre for North American Business Studies
During
the reporting period the Centre, which is affiliated with the Faculty of Business
Administration, offered

colloquia on important North American business issues ranging
from U.S. energy policy to labour mobility, for more than 900 senior business and government
representatives.-------
Research Skills for Heath Care Professionals
The
Research Skills for Health Care Professionals
program, sponsored by the Gerontology
Research Centre, began in 1989 with 6 courses. In 1991, the program won an Award of
Distinction from the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education. There are
now 12 courses in the program, and several have been adapted for in-house presentation to
organizations such as St. Paul's Hospital and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and
Yukon, as well as being offered in locations outside the Lower Mainland.
Writing
and Publishing Program
The first courses from the University's Writing and Publishing Program were offered in
1983. Now in its 10
1 year, the Program has five streams (professional writing, technical
writing, publishing, business writing and strategic communications), three new certificate
programs (Business Writing, Technical Writing and Publishing), and offers more than 100
courses annually.
Conferences
During the reporting period, University Faculties, schools and departments sponsored 28
conferences, involving 3,956 registered participants.
