I have served on the Senate Nominating Committee since the June by-election and look forward
once again to serving on the committees now open for election.. My immediate goals are focused
on learning and gaining experience so that I can more effectively and enthusiastically represent
student interests. I believe it is not enough to just know about the issues and difficulties facing
SFU. It is more crucial to know how to approach these concerns intelligently and optimistically.
As a first time senator, I hope to be given a chance to take a more active role in senate activities.

Faculty of Arts
B.A. (U.B.C.); M.A. (U. of T.); Ph.D. (U. of T.)
As a member of the School of Criminology's Graduate Programs Committee for the past two
years, I have been involved in decision-making about the allocation of Graduate Fellowships and
the recommendations of students for scholarships and bursaries. SPCSAB is of particular interest
to me because I am concerned about maximizing the financial assistance to students in times of
fiscal restraint and ensuring that the adjudication process in making awards is as equitable as
possible.
As a former librarian and a current member of the Archives and Records Management Committee at
SFU, I have a special interest in library development and some knowledge about the workings of
library information systems.

92-93); Representative to the Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee (92-93).
I am interested in being a member of the senate committee governing academic discipline and
student conduct since I have an interest in students, their problems, and in meeting the demands of
justice and fairness with compassion.
DHIR, ROBIN
Major - Faculty of Business of Administration
I am interested in learning more about the university and its workings. Being a student senator
from the Faculty of Business I am obviously interested in seeing the university run efficiently and
also to see it be fiscally responsible. I have been a part of numerous committees in the past and
even presently -- whether at school, within the community, or for a political party. The Senate
committees I have chosen mostly pertain to the undergraduate side of things and I hope I have the
opportunity to represent the interests of the students of S.F.U. ?

other way around! (It seems they have to be continually reminded of this).

I believe we should try to provide a high quality education for undergraduate and graduate
students, and that this is best done by research-oriented faculty members. Faculty must be active
in planning the academic programme, hence my interest in SCAP and SCUB. We should
encourage students and faculty to be involved in education and research internationally, and I hope
to remain involved in SCIA and IUSEC.

I have been on the Chemistry Department Undergraduate Studies Committee for many years
andhave strong associations with high school and community college teachers. As a teacher of
about 600 students per year, my greatest concern is with the quality of education and services we
provide to our undergraduates. I believe that recent university policies have led to lower standards
of teaching and service, and I wish to contribute to committees which will restore them to their
previous high levels.

My principal interests are in the quality of undergraduate education offered by Simon Fraser. This
quality is enhanced by many factors, all of which concern me. Chief among these are the quality
of programs and courses we offer, the general comfort of the campus environment, the quality of
our faculty, and the quality of the students we attract to the University. To the improvement of this
last factor I have devoted my considerable attention to high school recruiting and scholarships,
particularly entrance scholarships. I have been involved since 1966 with curriculum in my
department and with the design of programs. I would like to involve myself more with the overall
design of the university's offerings, particularly the undergraduate offerings. I participated in
SCIMO's examination of instructional delivery and I believe that the effects of insufficiently
supported enrollment increases have led to a decline in the quality of the programs we offer. To
this end I believe that SFU should curtail enrollment and seek a university size nearer that
recommended by the Task Force on University Size, and nearer the one which will serve our
students well.

Statement
It seems to me that University policy is increasingly based on administrative convenience and fiscal
restraint, rather than on academic grounds. This is perhaps to be expected in an organization as
• large as our university, and in the present economic climate, but it should be resisted nonetheless.
A case in point is the sudden change in scholarship eligibility dictated by an administrative decision
to cut $500,000 from the Awards budget. According to the University Act, "the academic
governance of the university is vested in the senate". I shall continue to work hard in Senate and
its Committees to defend the authority of Senate to determine academic policy.
