SUAB Annual Report 1992
Page
The following actions were taken:
General
1)
?
Ratification of Chair of the Senate Appeals Board
Erik Chapman was ratified on June 17, 1992 as Chair of the Senate Appeals Board.
More generous transfer credit limits were approved for students participating in exchange programs.
This could include an additional 30 transfer credits at either lower or upper division, for a possible total
of 90 semester hours of transfer credit toward a bachelor's degree.
3)
SUAB 231 - Admission of Transfer Students to the Faculty of Science
Regulations were approved to establish separate entry requirements for transfer students entering
Science. These complement the admission requirements for secondary school graduates seeking
entrance to the Faculty.
4)
SUAB 232 - Proposal to remove the entr y quota for international students to
Management and Systems Science program
SUAB approved the removal of the entry limit for international students into MSSC. This matter was
subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on International Students and is still under
consideration (February 1993).
5)
SUAB 233 - Students who withdraw from the first semester - proposed clarification
of procedures
SUAB agreed to a clarification of procedures for new students who do not complete their first
semester. If the student withdraws after the application deadline for the following semester, the
deadline shall be waived. If the student withdraws under extenuating circumstances, they shall remain
eligible to register for the subsequent semester.
6)
SUAB 234 - Admission re q
uirements for secondar y
school graduates from other
Canadian provinces
Admission requirements were revised for all Canadian provinces except B.C. and Quebec, to more
closely match requirements for B.C. Grade 12 graduates. This is intended to provide a fairer
comparison of graduates from the school systems across different provinces.

SUAB 236 -
'Fair and Reasonable Admission Reauirements for Transfer Students:,
a position pacer prepared by the B.C. Council on Admissions and Transfer
and ?
SUAB 238 - Proposal to recognize Associate Degrees In Enrolment Planning
procedures
On several occasions, SUAB discussed the issue of the 'level playing field' in admission of B.C.
college transfer students. Many complex issues were identified. The Provincial Government
appeared slow to recognize the need for system-wide enrollment planning, but this is now being
developed. SUAB approved a proposal to give priority admission to holders of the Associate of Arts
or Associate of Science degrees from B.C. Colleges. Priority will be within the BC College transfer
category and will not affect applicants in other categories. This was subsequently approved by SCAP.
8)
SUAB 237 -
'The Graduation Proaram Workin
g
PaDer'
SUAB discussed the latest draft arising out of the
'Year 2000
series of educational reforms being
undertaken by the Ministry of Education. Members of the provincial Graduation Program Team visited
SFU in November to discuss their plans with SUAB.
10)
SUAB 239 - Admission from B.C. Secondary School - Use of percentage grades
For B.C. Grade 12 graduates, the use of percentage grades was approved for admission to 94-1 and
subsequent semesters. This will improve enrolment management and will appear fairer in the
perception of the public and the secondary school community.
11)
SUAB 240 - Irreaular Admission Policies
A proposal from the Faculty of Education was approved in principle to allow for more flexibility in
student admissions, to better match the entrepreneurial style of course offerings, sometimes used by
the Faculty. Further details on feasibility were left for action by the staff of the Registrar's Office.
