Stories of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, fabrication of data, etc.)
have made headlines in the news in recent years. Deliberate acts of
sabotage of other people's work, such as tampering with computer
systems (introducing a 'virus') or vandalizing controversial
experiments, are probably even more harmful. While such
occurrenccs are not nearly so common as the news media might lead
one to believe, nevertheless, the problems are serious and must not
be ignored. Dishonest behavior at the student level is a precursor to
similar behavior at the professional level. It is important that we
should inculcate standards of academic conduct, and deal effectively
with the small number of offenders.
