GS. 94.23
OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES ?
Memorandum
TO: Senate Graduate Studies Committee
?
FROM: Bruce P. Clayman
Dean of Graduate Studies
and Vice President, Research
SUBJECT:
Supervisory Committees ?
DATE: October 22, 1994
With the advent of several graduate programs which do not have a thesis, project or extended es-
says as a required culminating event, we need to consider the needs for supervision of students in
such programs. I suggest that they do not require a liii! supervisory committee as described under
Graduate Regulation 1.6.4, but only a single, properly qualified departmental advisor. It makes
sense to me to designate that person as the senior supervisor for maximum consistency with the
present situation. In some programs that person could be the Graduate Program Chair.
I propose the following change to Regulation 1.6.4 to accomplish this:
Add two new sentences at the start:
"For students in degree programs in which a thesis, project
or extended essays is required, a supervisory committee, constituted as described below, must be
• ?
established For students in other programs, the senior supervisor alone comprises the supervi-
sory committee."
The rest of the regulation, including the requirement to form the committee in
the same semester as senior supervisor is appointed, remains the same.
This matter will be on the agenda of the next meeting of the Senate Graduate Studies Committee.
