SIMON FRASER UN1VERSIT1 SCAP 94-29
DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES
?
Memorandum
TO: Alison Watt, Secretary ?
FROM: B.P.
Clayman
Senate Committee on Academic Planning ?
Dean of Graduate Studies
SUBJECT:
Languages and Linguistics ?
DATE: April 29, 1994
At its meeting on April 11, 1994, the Senate Graduate Studies Committee formally approved the
discontinuance of the following programs that formally resided in the Program in Languages and
Linguistics:
• Master of Arts - Teaching of French
• Ph.D. - French
• Ph.D. - Spanish
The committee noted that this discontinuance in no way prejudices future consideration of
graduate programs in these areas and recommended that SCAP approve the discontinuance of
these programs.
At the time that the MA program in Latin American Studies was approved in early 1993, there
was no explicit discontinuance of the existing MA in Spanish which was also part of the Program
in Languages and Linguistics. This was merely an oversight; there was no intention to continue a
separate MA program. Therefore, to remove any possible technical ambiguity, I recommend that
SCAP formally approve the discontinuance of the MA in Spanish.

Memorandum
TO: Senate Graduate Studies Committee
?
FROM: B.P.
Clayman
Dean of Graduate Studies
SUBJECT:
Languages and Linguistics
?
DATE: April 7, 1994
The last remaining item of business related to the reorganization of the graduate program in Lan-
guages and Linguistics is the formal discontinuance of the components of that program that were
not incorporated in the new, departmental programs. This action was overlooked when the
SGSC approved the last of the departmental programs.
To this end, I recommend to the SGSC the discontinuance of the:
• Master of Arts - Teaching of French
• Ph.D. - French
• Ph.D. - Spanish
This discontinuance in no way prejudices future consideration of graduate programs in these ar-
eas.
Since this action is fully consistent with all previous planning, I do not believe that it requires fur-
ther consideration by departmental or Faculty committees. I therefore am making the recommen-
dation directly to the SGSC and am copying this memorandum to the departments and Faculty for
information.
