SUAB reviewed the outcomes of the academic evaluations of all students taken immediately
alter grades are processed, at the end of each semester. Members noted with pleasure that the
proportion of students in serious academic difficulty had dropped steadily. The reasons for this
Improvement in overall performance seem to be closely related to the higher admission standards
In use since 1988. The data are attached to this report.
The following actions were taken:
General
1)
Ratification of Chair of the Senate Appeals Board
K. Amason was ratified on December 24, 1993 as Chair of the Senate Appeals Board.
2)
SUAB 240, SUAB 240A - Irregular Admission Policy
SUAB recommended and Senate later approved a policy for admitting students to a limited number of
courses in the Faculty of Education, with the proviso that they do not displace any regularly-admitted
students. The proposal allows for relaxed deadlines, admission requirements and levels of
documentation. The students may not be working towards or approved into any SFU credential.
3)
SUAB 241 - Admission from Emil
y
Carr Colle
g
e of Art and Design
SUAB recommended and Senate later approved a proposal which treats students from the College in
the same manner as students from B.C. Community Colleges, I.e. they are admissible on completion
of one year of transferable academic study. The University previously had no admission policy for
students from this institution.
mralinew=1
-I I. M
SUAB reviewed the policy of applying this standing, when students have a very low gpa in one
semester, then cannot avoid the ING standing at the end of the next semester, regardless of their
performance. It was decided to continue with the current policy.
5)
?
SUAB 244 - Reports of the Senate Committee on International Students
SUAB discussed the SC1S report and gave recommendations to SCAP. Most SUAB members
favoured the majority report.

6)
SUAB 246
Minimum Grade for Transfer Credit
SUAB agreed unanimously that the current practice of granting credit for all passed courses
(including 0 or P grades) should be discontinued and that the minimum grade for transfer should be
C. However, it was also agreed that action on this be suspended until the matter had been discussed
at the B.C. Council on Admissions and Transfer, since there were implications for the transfer of
students within B.C.
7)
SUAB 247 -
Transfer Credit for Ungraded Passes
SUAB took action to limit transfer credit for ungraded
passes
(e.g.
credit/no entry) to those courses
which have been articulated for transfer credit and in which all students In the course are graded in
similar manner.
8)
SUAB 248 -
B.C.
Unlvórslty/SFU Transfer Guide
Transfer equivalency tables for the courses of other universities to SFU will not be
p ublished on paper
as requested earlier by SUAB, but will be made available for computer access via CWIS.
9)
SUAB 249 - Re
q
uest for Special Admission for
Field School Particloants
SUAB agreed that the Director of Admissions should exercise discretion In accepting and processing
late or under-documented applications from applicants who are seeking entry to one of the overseas

should continue, at least until such time as university-wide policy-on students with disabilities Is
developed.

SUAB decided to not accept the diploma for admission purposes.
12)
?
