S.94-2O
SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
OFFICE OF THE VICE-PRESIDENT, ACADEMIC

MEMORANDUM
To:

Senate
From:
?
J. M. Munro, Chair
Senate Committee on Academic Planning
Subject: ?
Vectors
Date: ?
February 17, 1994
Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies and the Senate
Committee on Academic Planning gives rise to the following motion
Motion:
"that in S73-125, section c) be revised
from:
That within the total number of contact hours assigned to a course, and subject
S ?
to the approval of the departmental undergraduate curriculum committee, the
Chair be permitted to vary the vector pattern. Such vector patterns to reflect
only the in-class requirements and the calendar description of the course.
to:
That the vector pattern approved by the Senate when a course is initiated may
be changed with the approval of the Chair and the Faculty. The vector pattern
shall reflect the in-class requirements and the calendar description of the course.
The Faculty decision shall be reported to SCUS for information.
Although the current policy (S.73-125, attached) has been in place since 1973, there are now
some additional funding pressures that could result in a shift from the tutorial system in a
piecemeal basis. While there is a need to retain flexibility and to respond to innovative
ways of delivering course material, there is a corresponding need to keep track of what is
happening across faculties and the University as a whole. Currently course vectors are first
approved by a Faculty and the proposed amendment to the policy places authority for
changes to vectors with that same body. The added step of reporting to SCUS allows for a
broader monitoring of such activity across the University, and for bringing forward
expressions of concern to SCAP and Senate.
