This year, the mix of funding and gift acquisitions enabled the Library to avoid
any serial cancellations and to substantially improve the monograph accessions rate.
As the Library's Annual Report indicates, expenditure proportions among the Faculties
have remained remarkably constant over the last four years. Acquisitions from
approval plans and current periodical subscriptions have remained level and any
expenditure increases have been in the discretionary monographs budgets. Since
recent Library surveys of both faculty and students have indicated that both groups
place increased acquisitions as their highest priority, the Senate Library Committee is
pleased to see the current trend and hopes that it will continue.

Revision of the New Library Loan Policy
The Senate Library Committee endorsed a number of recommended changes to
the new Library loan policy. Effective April 1, 1994, fines for library materials returned
late were halved for 3-week, 1-week and recalled books to $1.00 per day with a
maximum of $25.00. Faculty and graduate students were given a semester loan
period. 20 % of the high use books were placed on a three-week loan period for
undergraduates and extra-mural borrowers. All new books added to the Library's
collections are to be given a high use category until a low usage pattern results in
adjusting these books to a semester loan category for undergraduate borrowers. The
semester loan due date was adjusted to one week after the exam period with no grace
period for return. The renewal of semester loan material was limited to once (it was
formerly twice). In addition, a few minor changes were endorsed which were
necessitated by implementation of the new Innovative computer system.
Reports on Inter-Library Loans, Library Computerization, SFU Book Robot, etc.
The Senate Library Committee considered reports on Inter-Library Loans and
Document Delivery and whether fees should be established. This was postponed until
the Library had more experience with user direct document requesting and full-text
document delivery.
The Senate Library Committee considered reports on the implementation of the
new Library computer system and an Innovation Fund Application to provide full-text
document delivery for approximately 500 business journals.
The Senate Library Committee also considered preliminary reports on various
Library surveys conducted during 1994/95.
The Senate Library Committee also reviewed the proposed SFU Book Robot
Project. Despite the continuing advances in library computerization, it will still be
necessary to plan a facility to store additional print materials for the Library.
Note: The SFU Libraries Annual Report for FY 1994/95, is
