COURSE ALTERATION AND RATIONALE
(PLEASE USE THIS FORM FOR THE FOLLOWING CHANGES:
Change of Title, Change of Course Description,
Change of Credit Hour, Change of Vector,
Change of Prerequisite, Change in Requirements for Graduate Program, etc.)
PROGRAM IN LIBERAL STUDIES
1.
Under 'Degree requirements' at the end of the first sentence of para. I (p. 296
of current calendar) change 'and to submit two Extended Essays for oral
examination' to 'and to submit
1
two extended essays or one project :
.tOv OVdI
2.
After the first sentence of para. 2 of 'Degree Requirements' insert 'The Project,
which may make significant use of non-written media, will also be developed
from work done in the courses.'
3.
In para. 5 change 'Director of the Program' to 'Chair of the Graduate Program
Committee.'
4.
In para 5 change 'extended essays' to 'extended essays or project.'
RATIONALE:
Change #1: The diversity of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs across North
America whose one common quality is their interdisciplinary nature, makes it clear
that there is no single 'right' way to end the student's experience in a Liberal Studies
program. Some programs require one or more extended essays, others require a
thesis and still others, such as N.Y.U., Duke Univ. and CUNY Graduate School,
allow for the possibility of a project - something which has always been envisaged as
a possibility for the program at S.F.U. Our program, now in its fourth year, has
students who are completing their work and several of these have expressed the
wish to do a project rather than the two extended
.
essays. We therefore request that
the students be given this option.
Change #2: The reference to non-print media is intended to open up possibilities for
the Project rather than to restrict them. Projects consisting of a single prose (or
poetry, presumably) work are not meant to be excluded. Rather we simply would
point out to the students that there are other possibilities they might want to
consider.
Change #3: This is simply to bring the practice in the Program in Graduate Liberal
Studies into line with that elsewhere in the University. (Up until this term the
Director of the Program in Graduate Liberal Studies was also serving as Chair of the
Graduate Program Committee, but now there is a separate person for this latter role.'
Change #4: Change necessitated by #1.

>> Dear Ralph,
>> ?
In the Graduate Liberal Studies Program we wish to introduce a
>> course 'LS 999 M.A. Project', which would simply be a number under which
>> our students working on a project rather than two extended essays could
>> register. The project would consist of Independent work on a topic approve
>> by the student's supervisory committee which would normally involve
>> non-print media in some substantial way. We need a note from you saying

>> I would be grateful. (If you have any questions I will he at 3666 until
