Activity Report
CIDA University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development Proposals
SCIA reviewed and recommended submission to CIDA of the following two University Partnerships
in Cooperation and Development (UPCD) proposals, each accompanied by a budget request of
$750,000:
(a)
Ghana Distance Education Development Project,
submitted by
C. Yerbury, Director, Distance Education.
(b)
Lijiang Co-operative-Based Development Project,
submitted by the
David See-Chai Lam Centre for International Communication.

Eastern Indonesia University Development Project
When recommending to the President in 1993 that the University should enter into a second phase
of the Eastern Indonesia University Development Project, SCIA added the proviso that the Project

establish a Development Education component. Progress reports were delivered in person to SCIA
by the Project Director on April 18 and September 22, 1994. At its November meeting, SCIA received
a report detailing the outcome of a five-person mission to Indonesia which took place in September.

SCIAs review of the 1993/94 Kenya Field School resulted in a number of conditions being set before
any future Kenya Field School proposal would be recommended to the President.

International Undergraduate Student Exchange Committee (IUSEC)
The International Undergraduate Student Exchange Committee selected 32 students for
participation in exchange programs outside Canada beginning September, 1994, and a further five
for January, 1995. The current IUSEC membership follows: J

Malaysia: Faculty of Business Administration Proposal
SCIA gave support in principle to a feasibility study proposed by the faculty of Business
Administration to investigate establishing a branch campus in Malaysia.

Prague Field School
Following minor design modifications, a 1995 Field School in Prague was recommended to the
President for acceptance.
7.
Activities Received for Information and Review
Information was received on the following initiatives: Shashtri Indo-Canadian Institute funding
to the Centre for Community Economic Development to research activities in Bhopal; reports on
SFU Field Schools in China, Cuba, Indonesia and Thailand; and reorganization in the Office of
International Cooperation
