GS.96.13
OFFICE OF
THE
DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES
?
Memorandum
TO: Senate Graduate Studies Committee ?
FROM: Bruce P. Clayman
Dean of Graduate Studies
SUBJECT: Graduate Co-op Status
?
DATE: May 3, 1996
There is increasing interest in Co-op programs at the graduate level and I would like to find a fair,
consistent method of handling the registration status and fees of graduate co-op students. I have
consulted with Ms. Doreen Godwin, Director of the undergraduate co-op programs and would like
to recommend the following scheme to the Senate Graduate Studies Committee:
• Departments with a co-op option would have an appropriately named course - as is the case now
- and students who are on co-op terms would register in this course;
• If this was the only course in which they registered and if they were
not
working on their theses,
projects, etc., their registration status could be "co-op" or "full-time," at their option. Otherwise,
they would be required to register "full-time;"
• The "co-op" registration fee would be one-halfa fee unit (same as the PT fee);
• The co-op registration fee would count as one-halfa fee unit toward the 6 fee units required at
the Master's or 8 at the Ph.D.;
• If registered in "co-op"
only,
their only other fees would be the SFSS activity fee and, if applica-
ble, the graduation fee.
Note the requirement that students who do not complete their degrees in consecutive semesters of
full-time registration are required to pay at least 6 (or 8 at the Ph.D. level) fee units in order to obtain
their degrees. In other words, there would be no 'discount' for early degree completion for students
who register co-op or part-time at any point in their programs. This should affect very few students,
since co-op terms extend graduate programs by their very nature.
I have attached the changes to calendar language required to implement these recommendations and
look forward to discussion of this matter at the next meeting of the Senate Graduate Studies Com-
mittee.

New Graduate
Regulation:
1.4.6 ?
Co-operative Education
Co-operative Education integrates work experience and graduate studies. The name reflects the co-
operative relationship among the University, employer and student. Practical experience from work
terms is related to the student's major interests within the graduate program. A number of graduate
programs have been approved, by the relevant Graduate Program Committee, for Co-operative Edu-
cation ("co-op"). These are listed below.
Chemistry (MSc)
Mathematics and Statistics (MSc)
Resource and Environment Management (MRM)
The list of approved programs is subject to change.
The application to enroll co-op is subject to the approval of the student's Supervisory Committee and
Graduate Program Committee. Each Department has a specific course for the co-op work term or
practicum.
lithe co-op work term is the only course in which the student is registered and if the student is not
working on his or her thesis, projects, etc., the registration status could be "co-op" or "fill-time," at
the student's option. Otherwise, the student would be required to register "full-time." The co-op
registration fee is listed in the Graduate Fee Schedule and is counted as one-halfa fee unit toward the
fee units required for the degree. If registered co-op, the only other fees payable would be the Stu-
dent Activity Fee and, if applicable, the graduation fee.
