RE: PROGRESS EVALUATIONS

Section 1.8.1 of Graduate General Regulations reads:
Masters and Doctoral Students
1.8.1 Progress Evaluation
At least once each year, the Supervisory Committee will report on the students
progress. This report will be sent, in writing, to the Graduate Program
Committee with a copy to the student
This regulation was written to apply to graduate students in Masters
and Doctoral programs who have Supervisory Committees and clearly is an
important step in monitoring student progress, especially with respect to their
independent research: thesis, project or extended essays.
Master's students in a coursework degree, however, only have a
Senior Supervisor and since by definition the degree consists of coursework
and comprehensive exam, it explicitly excludes a thesis, project or extended
essays. For such students a formal progress review seems redundant because
they must maintain a CGPA of 3.0 to remain in 'good standing.' Students
who fall below 3.0 are immediately brought to light because they must have
departmental approval to register for the next semester. If, however, they
maintain a CGPA of 3.0 their progress is ipso facto satisfactory.
Accordingly I wish to suggest the modification of s.1.8.1 as follows:
Add the text below to the present regulation:
The evaluation of students in coursework Masters degrees will rely on their
maintenance of a CGPA of 3.0 as required by Graduate 'regulation 1.5; in such
cases no separate evaluation is required.
