1995/6 Calendar (p. 290)
Thesis
Candidates successfully completing qualifying examinations will be
required to present a seminar on their research interests. The
seminar will be presented before interested faculty and students prior
to the presentation of a thesis proposal.
The candidate will present a thesis proposal which will be circulated
to faculty and resident graduate students. The candidate will present
this proposal at a departmental colloquium no later than the end of
the
fifth
semester of residence. In addition, and prior to the
completion of the thesis, the candidate will be expected to present
before interested faculty and students, a report on the progress of
his/her research. The timing of this report will be selected in

RATIONALE ?
The presentation of a seminar to the department was intended to
demonstrate breadth of research interests. Our experience has been,
however, that this requirement slows down progress in the
• ?
development of a thesis proposal, which should be the candidate's
primary goal at this stage of the Ph.D. programme.
The progress report was intended to provide a forum forfeedback
prior to the Ph.D. defence. In the opinion of recent graduates,
however, it was felt that this report did not serve a useful function
and should be eliminated.
