Senate Committee on Academic Planning
ANNUAL REPORT -
1995
The Senate Committee on Academic Planning held 14 meetings in 1995. Most
recommendations of SCAP go forward to Senate for information or further action.
Therefore this report presents, in summary form, the major actions of the
Committee.
PROGRAMS APPROVED FOR FURTHER PLANNING
When a new program is being considered, it is expected to be forwarded to SCAP for
review at an early stage so that information about the program can be factored in to
planning initiatives. This can also prevent the development of program plans which
are considered beyond the scope and mission of the University. This initial approval
process is entitled "approval for further planning and development". The following
programs received approval to proceed with further planning and development:
MA. Program in Urban Planning and Urban Studies
Industrial Mathematics
Honors Program in Physics and Physiology
Master of Environmental Toxicology

Information about these programs is also provided to the Ministry of Education,
Skills and Training as part of the Degree Program Review process.
NEW PROGRAMS APPROVED
Graduate Program in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
M.A. in Gerontology (awaiting approval from DPRC and Minister)
M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology (new stream)
Faculty of Arts proposal for Environmental Studies Program
Asia Canada Program (awaiting approval from DPRC and Minister)
M.A.. in English and French Literatures
Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Communication
Post Baccalaureate Diploma in French and Education
Joint Major Sociology/Anthropology and Women's Studies
Joint Major Anthropology and Linguistics
New degree initiatives are also considered by the Ministry's Internal Degree Program
Review Committee and the Degree Program Review Committee, before being
forwarded to the Minister for approval.
Under the partnership agreement with the University College of the Fraser Valley,
the following initiatives were approved:

Extended Minor in Mathematics or Mathematics with Statistics Option

PROGRAM TERMINATED
Master of Aquaculture
CURRICULUM REVISIONS
SCAP received and forwarded material on a variety of curriculum revisions which had
been reviewed and approved by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies and
the Senate Graduate Studies Committee. The following curriculum revisions were
considered:
Faculty of Applied Sciences: ?
3 submissions from SCUS and 3 from SGSC
Faculty of Arts: ?
1 submission from SCUS and 4 from SGSC
Faculty of Business Administration: 1 submission from SCUS and 1 from SGSC
Faculty of Education: ?
2 submissions from SCUS and 1 from SGSC
Faculty of Science:
?
2 submissions from SCUS and 3 from SGSC
At the undergraduate level, 23 courses were deleted and 91 courses were added. At
the graduate level 19 courses were deleted and 45 courses were added. A further 14
undergraduate courses which had not been offered for six semesters were deleted.
ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT (SCEMP)
SCEMP recommended targets for undergraduate admissions for 1995/96 which were
approved by SCAP and Senate based on the funded enrollment projections. SCEMP
also forwarded a recommendation regarding the international student intake targets.
In February 1995, SCEMP recommended and SCAP supported annual targets for
limited enrolment programs for 1995/96. These were referred back by Senate and
were discussed by SCEMP in March and again in September 1995. In April 1995
and October 1995, under delegated authority, SCEMP recommended and SCAP
approved revisions to the enrollment targets for 95-3 and 96-1. SCAP also
recommended to Senate in October 1995 the new student intake targets for 1996/97.
