Topic:

Psychology Curriculum Changes
Following approval at the department meeting of May 8, 1997, we recommend
the following addition to the regulations governing admission to the Psychology
Honours Program (see
p.
147 of the 97/98 Calendar):
• the department expects to give clear admission to eligible applicants whose
SFU GPA is at least 3.33. Applications from students with a lower CGPA will
be held until spring semester grades are known, and will then be considered
Ll
?
on an individual basis.
Rationale
The Psychology Department has always admitted to its Honors Program all
eligible applicants. In the last two years this has produced enrolments of about 30
students in the core honors project courses (PSYC 490/499), which is the maximum
that can be accommodated in the preferred course format of a single-section seminar.
We are concerned that a rise in the number of eligible applicants may force a change in
this format, and we have been considering ways in which we might limit enrolment in
the Honors Program. GPA is the most rational basis for enrolment limitation, but we are
reluctant simply to raise the minimum level from 3.00. CGPA is a crude measure, and
the number of students is small enough to allow a more careful, individual assessment.
We therefore propose to use a CGPA level of 3.33 to determine whether an
applicant to the Honors Program is given clear admission soon after the mid-March
deadline, or is placed in a hold category. For the latter group, we will wait until their
spring semester grades are known, and examine each applicant's credentials on an
individual basis. The criterion will be success in graduate school, since preparation for
graduate work is the primary focus of the Honors Program.

Sociology /Anthropology and Criminology have some common methods and theoretical
concerns; for example, the relation between such variables as class, gender, ethnicity, and crime;
the social construction of deviance; the law as a social phenomenon; the general social, political,
and economic frameworks of society that condition the nature and perception of social problems.
This joint major is recommended for students who share these concerns.
Admission to these joint major programs is contingent upon the enrollment limitation
requirements of the School of Criminology. Application for admission must follow the general
procedures established by the School.
(Note: Sociology/Anthropology offers degrees in Sociology OR Anthropology, as well as a joint degree in
Sociology AND Anthropology. Students who are interested in pursuing a faint prograin in
Sociology/Anthropology and Criminology should contact the Advisors in both S IA and Criminology.)
