Chair, ACNGP
SUBJECT:
ACNGP Membership ?
DATE: July 28, 1997
According to the Terms of Reference of the ACNGP, the Faculty representatives are to be elected
by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee from among the Faculty's members of the SGSC.
Consequently, in the Faculties of Education and of Business Administration, only one member of
the FGSC, the Graduate Program Director, has been technically eligible to sit on this (or any
other) subcommittee of SGSC. Even if both of each Faculty's two seats on SGSC were filled, the
burden of committee work would still be shouldered by only one or two individuals. In fact, it has
often been necessary to accept a FGSC member other than the Graduate Program Director in
order to have a fully-constituted membership of ACNGP. This situation will be exacerbated with
the creation of the proposed standing Subcommittee to hear graduate student appeals, and the
concomitant increase in committee duties.
I would therefore like to propose that the Terms of Reference be modified to extend the eligibility
for SGSC Subcommittee membership to all members of the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee.
. While the change would apply to all Faculty GSC's, in practical terms only the two "single-
department" Faculties would be affected, since in the other Faculties (Applied Science, Arts, and
Science) this is already the case, by virtue of their GSC's composition.
Would you therefore accept the following proposal for consideration by SGSC, and with its
approval, by Senate:
that the Terms of Reference of the Assessment Committee for New Graduate Programs (ACNGP)
be amendedfrom:
"One member from each Faculty elected by the respective Faculty Graduate Studies Committee
from the SGSC"
to:
"One member from each Faculty elected by and from the respective Faculty Graduate Studies
Committee"
C:
M. McGinn
?
I concur and recommend to the Senate Graduate Stud-
ies Committee the proposed changes to the Terms of
Reference for the Assessment Committee for New
Graduate Programs (ACNGP).
